    Default Cypress Pine Box

    G'day fellow woodies

I've enjoyed seeing all the great looking boxes you guys are producing and it spurred me on to have a go. Keep them coming.

So here I am venturing into the world of bandsaw boxes with my new Powermatic 14" bandsaw. Wow! what a buss!

I started off having a go using the Steve Ramsey bandsaw box design found on his WoodworkingForMereMortals.com website. I laminated up a block from a nice coloured piece of cypress pine flooring from Bunnings.

I cut the outside shape using the 3/8" blade that came with the bandsaw and it cut really poorly with pronounced saw marks. I knew I wasn't going to be successful at cutting the draw out and I had been reading that 1/4" is much better cutting curves. So on the phone to Henry Bros and ordered a 1/4" and 1/8" blade, which were on my doorstep within the week (great service).

On with the new 1/4" and off I go. Again Wow! - like slicing thru butter. Better practice on some scrap timber - all good. So into the cypress block and cut out this drawer. Cutting nicely around the corner and before I knew it here I am cutting out thru the carcass of the box.

So onto plan B - use the drawer as the outside shape for a smaller box. Lesson learnt from the first attempt - take it slowly. Still managed to run out thru the carcass. which you can see in the front on photo shop. And the right side is a bit dodgy where I glued the cut back together. Ah well, I'm learning. The final box dimensions are 130 x 80 x 80.

Anyway I got there in the end - sanding, waxing with Ubeaut Traditional Wax and flocking the inside of the drawer. All new experiences for me and thoroughly enjoyable. Can't wait to tackle another box.

Well that's my contribution. Here are some photos - Enjoy.

    Default bandsaw box

    Good work Ray,
I started off on bandsaw boxes after buying a b/saw to cut ribs etc for model planes.
Then I bought a lathe and have the best of both worlds.
    Regards Ian

Looks great, love the grain in just about any pine. I've had a boo-boo or 2, similar and with new blades. Enjoy.
