    Default drawer lining

i'm curious to know if anyone has some opinions on what to use for lining the drawer of my first bandsawed box... i've still got some sanding and the finishing to do but she's almost done!

i bought some patterned felt that i can cut up to size and glue in with some spray adhesive or i've read about suede-tex but obviously to get going it's more money to buy adhesive, flocking and an applicator...

any votes for one over the other?

    thanks.

I got some adhesive backed felt that seems to work well.

I would, and do, use the flocking powder every time. Very simple, seemless joints, useful for difficult shapes ..... cheap.

I wouldn't bother with the applicator .... I simply paint on the glue and then fill the entire drawer with the flocking powder (hint pour from one container into drawer which is held over a second empty container) ..... after the drawer is full I simply empty the unused flock back into the container and move onto the next one.

I have done at least 50 drawers from one pack of flocking powder and glue and still have 90% remaining. From memory it is was about AU$20 for the glue and the flocking.

If you are using one of the many Australian fine timbers, then show it, no need to reach for anything artificial.

I have to agree with Tony, but if you feel that lining will improve the box make sure you keep the waste piece of timber left over when you cut out the draws and use it as a pattern to mark out on plain felt, when cutting, cut on the outside of the line you marked on the felt, this makes up for the width of saw cut lost on the waste piece used for the pattern, use the same glue that you use to glue the box together. Paint the glue on the wood and place the felt in the draw, you can move the felt around for a good fit, I use a small screwdriver to push it around.

If you only want to line the bottom for jewelry or other items you might wrap the felt around a piece of cardboard and press fit it in. Tou can then change it easily when it gets tatty. You can also put some foam cushioning under the felt. never made a jewel box but had an old one done like that and I blessed the maker as it was easy to fix it.

i've got the flocking powder and glue and the oil is almost cured. the wood just isn't that interesting to leave it bare. plus the person i'm making for loves purple...

anyway, does anyone with experience with this stuff know if i MUST seal the lined area (with lacquer, poly or something similar) before applying the glue? or if painting the glue over the oiled surface will render it ineffective?

    thanks.

My guess would be that the glue over the DO will be ok.

I use the black flocking and glue and tend not to oil the inside but instead paint the inside with black paint to seal and then apply the glue and flock. I use the black paint to seal the wood so not to have the wood suck up all the glue, and secondly to make sure if there are any small spots that dont get fully flocked then the back paint hides this well.
