For the Dux
I had inside knowledge a couple of days ago that my neighbours daughter was to be awarded dux of Yr 12 (final year of secondary schooling in W.A.) at the grad ceremony held last night. Tuesday I had an idea - duck band saw box (background - when my daughter got dux a few years ago she was nicknamed The Duck and got associated duck things - the tradition stuck when my niece followed suit - getting dux - a few years later). So googled duck pictures, got a drawing together and hit the shed.
The timber is sheoak - same firewood timber as I used for 21st box - and 2 coats danish, EEE, trad wax and mop finished (not enough time for 3 coats of oil). Handed it over today at 10.30 am!!
The pen is from the wood cut out of the drawer.

Quite pleased with the result - a few more days would have been nice to tweak a couple of bits that could be better, but timing was important.

Great looking box JD. I have not yet made any bandsaw boxes, but if the weather over here in Scotland would warm up a bit i will have a go soon. I just hope i can turn out the same quality of box as you produce.
What tips can you give to a beginner like myself.
Dermot.

Hi Dermot
I saw some pics of these boxes and decided I just had to give them a go. I purchased a book - will post the name tomorrow as it is still in the shed Louis ??? - and then raided the firewood pile. They are so much fun and fairly forgiving! Great book, clear instructions and step by step pics.
Advice from a rank beginner:
go with as thin and fine a band saw as you can unless you REALLY like sanding or perhaps are working with soft wood timbers - my WA timbers all tended to be hard = more sanding. A recent olive one was much easier to sand.
After cutting the back off, cut out the drawer and then re glue the back onto the main piece. At this point cut the outside shape - saves cutting time and gluing 'square shapes' are easier than rounded ones . Some books have you cut the outside shape after the drawer and then glue the back on and then cut the back to suit rest of box, double handling in my opinion.
Sand the inside of the back before gluing as this will be the inside of the drawer - much easier to get smooth now than when it it glued back on.
Don't take it too seriously and enjoy - the duck box was only my 6th or so attempt at a band saw box, so if I can, anyone can!
JD
PS many family members have just received their band saw boxes for christmas and their were (or pretended convincingly) to be happy with them!Last edited by Touchwood; 27th December 2009 at 01:42 AM. Reason: added PS
