Default What the heck. Give it a go

    Hi,
Well I have been looking at all these nice boxes for years and on an impulse I decided to have a go so this is the first run. I just did them free hand without sticking on a pattern. Sort of went with the lump of wood. It is a nice change not having to measure things out.
Ill have to get one of those single blade guide thingies as I only just managed to get tooth clearance with the side rollers on the top and only used the back bearing below as there was no way it would clear a 1/4'' blade.
The side by side is NG rosewood. The up and down is Fiddlewood and the single is Sheoak. Finished with danish oil.
    Regards
    John

welcome to bandsawn box making. you did good with these boxes, well done !

a 1/4" blade is generally adequate for bandsawn box making if you following the principle that it (the blade) is comfortable bandsawing the rounded shape to match the size of a twenty cent piece.

a 20 cent piece is the best jig ever, it only sells for 20 cents and you can always get a full refund if not satisfied !

Thanks guys for the encouragement. A side of woodwork I had not tried before and a good way to use scrap wood. Those natural edge bits were going to be turned but cracks set in so safer to cut into boxes than put on the lathe. The single drawer sheoak one I did with ca glue to speed the process up. Result was a poor looking glue line even if solid enough. A few lessons learned along the way. I am sure to have another go sometime so I'll be back.

Love the one with the side by side drawers, nice shape and a great piece of wood.

Like them all, fine work. Really like the Sheoak , color and grain. Time to find some more scraps. Now that you've given us a look we'll be looking for more.

The only thing that restricts you with band saw box making is your imagination. You can make anything you want out of almost anything and it looks good.

Yer well on the way John (not a bad name either ) Just let your imigination go.

As the 14th Feb will be raising it's 'loving' head not long after this silly rush? I came up with a silly, simple little box years back that took a few minutes to make from any small branch, about 3" diameter

Apple is supposed to be, according to biblical times, the tree of love and this is a piece of apple branch and was one of the first band saw boxes I made about 14 years or so back. Not a lot of finesse, but it looks good anyway to my OHs eyes. Later boxes I put a small turned pin head handle for the draw, but basically the same and they sold like hot cakes those 14 years back for about £6 each if I remember correctly. So double that for todaze pricings me-thinks?

Well, you got to look ahead ain't ya?

Edit : - Just had a look at the pikky. It has got belted around a bit in the 2 moves it took to get us here. It weren't like that to start, 'onest guv!!
My ambition is to grow old disgracefully. So far my ywife recons that I'm doing quite well! John.
