Default Hello do you mind if I pop in for a visit

Hi All I’m sort of a visitor in this part or the work shop I generally hang about in the toys or model building section making a nuisance of myself there, but ventured over here for a sticky beck, and to ask a couple of questions about making bandsaw boxes first off I have just bought a Jet Powermatic 14’’ bandsaw and I do intend to buy a carter stabilizer STD1 I believe that is the one I need
What do you think would be a good selection of blades to purchase I would imagine that I would get a 1/4 and 1/8 inch not shore of teeth numbers or style? Could I get some help on that one please?
I have already met Yosam and he helped me with my decision on buying my bandsaw I did tell him I would be calling in over here.
I did have a small GMC bandsaw that I have just turned into an 8mm belt sander for doing fine work in the model side of things one of the reasons I done this was the bandsaw blades kept breaking I did have it set right it just seemed to be a fact of life with those narrow blades.
Should I expect the same using narrow blades on the Jet saw I am hoping not but I’m sure someone will let me know one way or the other?
I was planning to sell the other bandsaw which works really well but I have been watching Mr Snodgrasse’s video on You Tube over & over & over etc, etc, he did mention that two bandsaws are very handy so maybe I might keep it and see if I really do need two.
I am now quite confident that I can set up a bandsaw so much so that I have pulled the new one down to confirm just that! So stand by for some more questions on the how to side of life.
I suppose a lot of you folks hang out in the bandsaw section as well so I might meet you there also.
Just to sum up be gentle I’m only an old pensioner with a bad memory and a very slow work late
    Colbra Col

Ps I will finish the road grader before I get right into this bandsaw boxes maybe three weeks or maybe four
May your saw stay sharp and your nails never bend

    Default bandsaw blades

    HI COLBRA,
I think a 1/4" 6tpi would be suitable if you are using a carter guide,I spoke to mr. snodgrass at the sydney wood show and that is what he was using he was turning tight circles.
    regards john.

Thanks John I think I can remember in the video he changed the blade to make the bandsaw box but I cannot remember the size it must have been a 1/4'' inch do they break as readily as the blades on the small saw as the one I mentioned.
    Thanks for your help

Gday Colbra, Looking forward to seeing some more boxes on here. As far as blades go, the 1/4" ones just take a little longer to break, but they will break. ( especially on my crappy Ryobi band saw) Harry

a 1/4 inch will do most of your bandsawn box making. use a 20 cent coin to define the round section (fits nicely with the 1/4 inch). think about getting a higher tpi, that will help to reduce the machine marks and thereby reduce the need for sanding

Well, my blades seems not to break at any point in time. I got them from an online supplier: BandSaw Blades Online - Custom Welded Band Saw Blades. Really tough blades!

HI Bosox What size blades are you using the folks here seem to be using 1/4 inch to make the bandsaw boxes.
Its only the start of my journey with bandsaw boxs I am finishing a road grader that I started in January this year before I get to make any boxes and that maybe a month away but thats a colbra estimate

Thanks Tony for the tips! How many TPI would you recommend for bandsaw box making seeing that more TPI give you smoother cut?
Have you seen the Alex Snodgrass video on the forum about setting up and using the Carter Stabilizer for small size blades? He was at the WWW show in Sydney a couple of weeks ago have you have seen the tool if so what do you think of it..... you may even have one.

thank you for Alex's video, a well worthwhile video for all bandsaw users. What he says makes sense although it is contrary to a number of other experts.

It would be nice to have two bandsaws running simultaneously, if only the budget and floor space would allow it!

The Carter web site has a lot of very useful information and worthy of spending some browsing there ~ Band saw blades, wheels, guides, and parts from Carter Products.

They also have a variety of tpi's, if you are to use their guide and an 1/8" blade then it is a 14 tpi for an 80" blade. However before buying make sure your bandsaw will be able to cope with an 1/8" blade, the crown of the wheel on some saws is designed mainly for re-sawing size blades and don't like the 1/8th.

    hope this helps,

Hi Tony I have been looking about at some bandsaw blades there are some that may suit my Jet Powermatic14 inch bandsaw they are 4mm (3/8) 10 tpi carbon blade I am not sure of the type set of the teeth…… do you think this would be a reasonable one to use along with a six and eight tpi 6mm ¼ blade carbon blade.

I thought if I tried these I could see which ones suited me to work with.

PS my bandsaw blade in 93'' 1/2 inches

I’ve been using 1/4 inch blades too. Remember the site I suggested? I think you can call and ask them regarding your problem.

Thank you Bosox for your reply on the band saw blades and there suitably for making boxes.
I have just received a 6 TPI" 1/4 inch wide blade, I think might do the job.
And on thicker stock if the saw dust starts clogging up in the cut I will go to a 4 TPI'' 1/4'' and try that size.
For re-saw I have bought a 3 TPI 1/2'' blade….. The 4 TPI 1/8 blades that I have ordered has not arrived nor have 3/16, I think they are getting hard to obtain now if that is the case I will contact your chap although the postage is going to be a bit prohibitive from overseas thank for your help

On thicker stock, I suggest take a 3TPI blade or less. To prevent saw dusts from clogging up the cut, a coarser tooth pitch blade is best. Maybe the 4 tpi blade will work with you but it’s more prone to stripping teeth. BTW, where did you get your blades?

    Default Help please?

Hi, have just read the above posts. I usually spend my time scrollsawing but have decided to have a go at bandsawn boxes. I have a 1/4 inch blade on my 14" Carba-Tec Bandsaw, and am awaiting delivery of a Carter STD1.
I would like to get the link for "Mr. Snodgrass' video"can anyone advise please?
