    Default Pointy Box

This is a prototype of a design that is a bit tricky to cut out without losing any fingers. I used a bit of waste pine before I tried it on a decent bit of timber, just to figure out the cutting procedure.

Tony probably does this sort of stuff in his sleep!

I didnt bother to shape the outside but can be made into any shape you like carved etc.

It was an interesting challenge, and I am happy to use the basic design now on some nice wood.

Doing this one also gave me an idea for using up all the little bits of plywood offcuts that seem to accumlate in the workshop

    Regards,

    Barrie

I only started playing / making bandsaw boxes and this seems interesting.

Not sure how far I am going to go with this yet.

    Barrie hi,

I am not sure whether OH&S rules and good practice permit the use of a bandsaw whilst asleep!

Looking at image 2, it appears you've bandsawn the back section from the squared block, if that is correct then I assume you used a jig to support the bandsawing of the drawers?

Generally, with this style of box, I'll cut a diamond shaped back from the block. However sometimes with inadequate planning I will cut through the side wall and thereby create some firewood! For this reason I am not a great fan of the "pointy box" and the cylindrical box, too much fuss; particularly as the size of the drawer and storage is limited; and invaraibly the space about the drawer looks to be larger than normal. (just a few t.w. thoughts?)

    Hi Tony,

Good thoughts as usual, many thanks. This was my first "pointy box" and I was intrigued with the cutting. I cut two adjacent sides off the back, should have cut a diamond shape like you; first mistake. I made sacrificial slides to cut out the drawers, then transferred the drawer profile to a waste block to make another sacrificial slide (one for each drawer). Gluing bits of ply together to make a block for the slide (sled?) saved using a solid bit that I might have found a use for later. Still needed a bit of care with the cutting.

I keep looking at the box wondering what I should do to it to give it a bit of balance or form. I am coming round to your way of thinking that the pointy box thing has some inherent drawbacks. The drawer space is a very minor proportion of the whole as well.

Just in case inspiration strikes, I'll keep looking at it for a while longer. If it doesnt there is a bit more firewood!

Your comment re round boxes is timely, I was thinking about a cylindrical "tower box". Might have to re-consider that one too.

    Nice to hear from you

    Regards,

    Barrie

Here is my round tower contribution consisting of three towers & drawers, hope this helps?
