    Default QLD Maple Box

    Hi All

I've not had much time for woodwork this year with one thing or another but a little while ago someone saw a bandsawn box I did earlier in the year and asked me if I could do one for them. I was rather suprised as it was my first attempt at a bandsawn box and certainly not up to the standard of some of the pieces I've seen here. Anyway not one to turn down the opportunity to make something, I have been working on this one on and off for a couple of months. It's the same design as my first one but this time in QLD Maple. I got to say that this stuff (obtained from Mapleman) has just the most beautiful figure in it and comes up an absolute treat.

So the box has been sanded to 600, two coats of Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil, then wet sanded / burnished up to 1500. After a few days curing it was hand buffed with U-Beaut trad wax to finish. It is absolutely silky smooth to touch. A big thanks has to go to LGS over on the finishing forum. His tips and advice for oil finishes have been very helpful and I would recommend them to anyone looking to do an oil finish for the first time.

All up I'm very happy with my second attempt at a bandsawn box (I even managed to get the flocking pretty good this time)

    cheers
    WH

It certainly did come up nice MM and the bits I got when I visited look even better. Just have to find the time to finish them off.

Really beautiful work, and the timber is a fantastic choice. I've got the same book, but have yet to attempt a box. Your second box looks like its your 102nd! Well done.
