    Default Do these qualify as bandsawn boxes?

    About a month ago, we had a sweet couple of letters dropped in our mailbox from the 9yo girls over the road. They were asking why we had some trees removed, as they liked them, and were we going to plant some new trees.

    Now, we saved a lot of timber from the trees, and we have a stockpile of it here held for those forumites who put their hands up at the time (yes, you will still get it)

    Anyway, in response to the girl's letters, we decided to give them something made from the timber, and I came up with these little boxes. All cuts on the bandsaw, a bit of machine sanding and a lot of hand finishing. The timber is Cypress, and the finish is wax over danish oil.

    My better half thinks the girls will love them.

    They're definitely bandsawn boxes, no matter how fussy people try to be over the term.

    Nice job, too. How'd you size the bottom inserts for fit? Use the sides as a template?

    I reckon she's right. The boxes will probably be special to them 'cos they knew the trees they came from.

    Hi and thanks,

    It's all made from a single lump of wood.

    I started with a length of branch a bit longer than each box and ripped it to roughly finished dimensions on the bandsaw. Didn't have a plan, just did it by trimming up the blank until it was 'happy'

    I drew my finished outside shape on the blank and then cut it (the curved outside ends) Then I sliced off the lid and bottom, drew the inside shape on the remainder and cut that, entering through one of the ends. Lastly, I cut the lid keeper from the plug.

    Assembly was in reverse order of disassembly Actually, I glued the body first, leaving the bottom off, then sanded the insides of the body and base through to 600 grit before I glued the base on. Hardest part is getting the lid bearing surfaces sanded without creating a gap, I'm going to try something different there next time.

    Yes, we're planting more trees. 9 Manchurian Pears have gone in. It's a bit hard with all these water restrictions, but we can put some drippers on in October, hooray.

    I can't see why anyone would question whether this works fit into the category of a "bandsawn box". There is ample evidence that your work was made by use of a bandsaw and as it is your first congratulations, one of the great things about making bandsawn boxes is, there are few precedents and therefore your work can become your own!

    If you look in Donna Menke's new book you will find a very similar box, her book is called "The Ultimate Band Saw Box Book". Without a doubt they are Bandsawn Boxes. Don't stop at these, keep them coming.

    TTIT, you might try a smaller blade, the BP16A doesn't cut tight corners with the big rip blade on it
