Solid wood block or resawn
G'day all,
Finally getting finished my setup (workshop), long cold winter. I have been given some 4"x4" and 5x5's maple blocks about 7 to 14" long. My goal is to do some bandsaw boxes with them. Is it best to use them whole (uncut) except for the squaring and cleanup, or should these be resawn and glued.
I do have access to long timbers - up to 12' - from a friend. I know he'll use some of his stock for his projects, mostly bigger stuff, beds etc.
later,

Hi Glen,
If you've got solid blocks use them, they come up really nicely. I made 1 from a slab of blackwood a couple of years ago & i loved the way the natural end grain shows up.

Agree with Ratrap, where ever possible stay with the solid blocks!

thanks guys, I have wondered what the best. I had thought that the resaw and glue up was to release the wood tension ??. I would prefer to work with a solid piece so I'll proceed in the near future to do such with the bit of stock I have. I have most of my equipment setup - just the bandsaw left to do, figures eh!. Was my late brothers and has been packed for a long time, but in vg condition.
Maybe make a thank you box for my friend's sweetie and a mallet for him.
Also, I know I'll probably do a block glue up at some and was wondering about mixing hardwood and softwood (maple/oak with say cedar). Anything to watch out for?

An interesting combination of timbers.
Not heard of, or had an problems with blended timber boxes, I guess the mositure content should be about the same for each timber?Tony Ward
