Still around
I havent been here for a while, but I am still at it. Here is a couple of latest efforts. First is camphor with some fiddle back grain, cedar draw fronts, second is red cedar. Osage orage draw pulls, finished with tung oil. (I have better photos coming!).
Nice one Tony, always like seeing your stuff.
Kind regards,

Good to see you back here! I like the blended timber box, both appearance and the concept of blending - well done, will we see more?Tony Ward

Thanks for the kind words. I like making boxes but I keep getting interrupted by orders for stuff from SWMBO!
Tony, the ideas for the boxes arent original, there are plenty like them as you well know. The two wood one was a bit of a trial but I will do more as I find nice woods that match or complement each other. I have some nice spalted silky oak that came up well in a couple of boxes, just waiting for something to come along to match before I try a two wood version. Stan Ceglinski (Mullumbimby Wood works now at Billinudgel) has kindly given me access to his vast timber stacks so I can fossick the "lumpy" bits so maybe I'll find something there. He has a new showroom opening soon and some of my boxes will be there.
Anyway good to hear from you again.

I do like your work Barrie, what is the finish?. I have tried red Cedar and white Cedar as a contrast which looked OK. I am tied up with other things at the moment but will be back as soon as I can.

Thanks Don for the comments; my finish routine is fairly simple. After sanding to 400 grit I wet them and dry overnight then sand again with 400 grit. Then I oil them with Organoil Hard Burnishing oil to saturation, leave them for a few days then start wet and dry oil paper from 400 grit to 1500 or 2000, rubbing in the slurry after each grade. Sometimes I'll buff them up with Organoil Woodsheen, and/or Traditional wax. I used to mix my own waxes but find Trad wax to be pretty good (still use mine on furniture). I like to keep them for at least a month and then lightly bring them up with a bit of orange oil. For health reasons I am prevented from using synthetics so I stick with the "oil only" method. If needed, my wife will use Estapol on bits of furniture!
You would be welcome to drop in, Artme, you'll find me in the phone book, the only Restall in Teven. If you are down this way drop in on Stan Ceglinski at Billinudgel, he has an amazing workshop and makes some interesting stuff.

Hi Barrie, I was wondering if you might be able to help me. I've been trying to get in contact with Mullumbimby Woodworks by phone and email with no luck. Do you happen to know when the new showroom will be open? I was actually wanting some wooden baby feeding spoons which I hear Stan makes, or do you know of anyone else that makes them??
Thanks!

Hi Shari,
Stan's new workshop/showroom is open at Unit 1 17 Lucky Lane Billinudgell (just up from the Sanctum factory). Its now called The Billinudgell Woodworking Company Pty Ltd, and phone numbers are 02 6680445 Fax 02 66804456 or Stan's mobile 0412 429 156. Postal address is PO Box 375 Billinudgell.
He has some baby spoons and he will be at the Brisbane wood show 14-16th May ( and at most of the others as well!).
Kind regards,

Hi Barrie, Thank you very much for the contact details, that's so helpful. I'm just at Goonellabah, so I'll make the trip one day this week!!
By the way, your boxes are beautiful! Hopefully I'll see some of them as well at the showroom.

Hello Barrie,
Your 'boxes' are beautiful. So effective with the contrasting woods.
Clare.
