Another First Timer
I keep seeing these lovely little boxes here and elsewhere on the web, so thought it was my turn to give it a shot.
I copied the basic shape from one in a YouTube video by Steve Ramsay, ( How to make a bandsaw box - YouTube ), but made a couple of changes.
Australian Red Cedar and Calantis Cedar, 100mm tall, 100mm deep, 130mm wide. Finished in 4 coats WOP, then rubbed back with 1200 and waxed.
I'm still thinking about the lining. Don't have any flocking etc, but I might make cardboard panels, wrap them in (dark blue) felt and glue them in place.
My saw is only rated for a minimum 1/4" blade, so the drawer gap is a bit wide, but otherwise it worked out OK. These things are fun. Already got more planned.
I'm wondering if I should try to get a 1/8" blade and test it in case it does work OK.

Nice work Humphrey and welcome to our little section of the forum. Great first effort so keep them coming.
I wouldn't stress too much about going to a 1/8 blade. Smallest I use is a 1/4 6tpi and I've not had any problems to date.
cheers
WHI don't suffer from stress, but I have been told I'm a carrier

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Harry and WH.
I had a closer look at my bandsaw and I don't think the thrust bearings adjust far enough in for a 1/8" blade, so I'm sticking with a 1/4". (6TPI)
To keep drawer gaps as narrow as possible, I was wondering if narrow kerf blades are available, or if all 1/4" blades are the same in that regard?

Finit
I got the lining done this morning. I went with the felt-covered cardboard method for simplicity, (and because the felt and cardboard were already here).

Now I can get on with planning the next one. Got the basic design drawn. Will be Merbau and QLD Silver Ash.

Nicely done. The box is beautiful and you did a fantastic job on the finish.

Really like the contrasting Cedars and a fine finish. The lining looks excellent using the cardboard, I'll try that on my next piece. Keep them coming, now that you got the bug.

Finish is just outstanding something I have yet to learn and develop the patience for. The felt cardboard looks super plush and soft. Lov it!

Thanks guys, and especially for the comments on the finish. That took as long as all of the rest of the box combined.
Glenn, if you do try the felt/cardboard lining method, if you use self-adhesive felt don't use contact adhesive to glue the panels in place. It dissolves the felt's original adhesive backing and it comes loose, potentially making a hell of a mess.
(Learned this the hard way, lining a traditional box. Got contact adhesive everwhere. )
I used epoxy, (Araldite), this time. It means holding the panels in place for a couple of minutes while the epoxy gels, but at least everything stays together.
This is fun. I'm already into the next one.
Just gluing up the blocks now. Merbau and some unknown pale-coloured kiln-dried hardwood left over from some 4 x 2's I bought a while ago. Was going to use QLD Silver Ash for the lighter timber, but I don't have enough on hand. Thought I had more.Last edited by Humphrey9999; 26th November 2012 at 09:33 PM. Reason: More info

Thank you very much for the good feedback guys. It's given me a bit more confidence for the next one, in hardwoods instead of softwoods and much larger.
I was lucky with this first attempt.

well done, be aware some bandsaws cannot handle a 1/8" blade !
