    Default Conkerberry?

Can anybody get a hold of Conkerberry carissa lanceolata? Is it still used or has it become totally obsolete

I can get hold of some but it's only big enough for pen blanks and not much more. It just don't grow much bigger than that with out the ants piping it out.

The bushies also call it Berry Bush.
Scruffy, low growing, bent & twisted, will eat you if you ride into it on a motorbike.
You can't ride into on a horse, they aren't silly enough.

Also known as Blackcurrant bush - what Cliff said plus thorns and edible berries. Spreads out to cover up to about 20 square metres and the easiest way to get the trunk out (if it has one) is to run round it with a heavy rope and drive off. It's native but the cockies don't like it cos' cattle won't eat it or even trample it out. Tiny bit's of wood only but the best turning timber I've ever stuck a chisel in!

Just checked out that thread - what a collection Any I've seen at that size before is always piped out bad by the ants. If the budget wasn't blown out by the Stubby, I'd be grabbin' some of that lot for sure!

Some of the really big stuff does have a hollow up it & there is, as always, a colour variation. Some of it is very orange & some of it is more a creamy brown coffee colour.
All of it is bigger than anything I have ever seen before.

A mate dropped these branches off on the weekend and the Conkerberry (far left) still has the leaves on it if thats any help Ding! Only discovered from his visit that there are 2 varieties - Carissa lanceolata (pictured) and Carissa ovata which is more common around here and doesn't develop much of a trunk.
The other logs are Hairy-oak (Flame she-oak), Ringed gidgee and Corkbark tree.

Same here! Has medullary rays like oak but is almost white so I imagine it will finish something like Silky oak. Turned a sample egg and it had a lot of pink fleck through it that I think will dry out - too green to tell - still dripping

The "medullary rays like oak but is almost white" description sounds like Canthium Canthium odoratum to me.

I got some from out near Longreach.
Interesting stuff but it cracks from the heart out even years after it was cut.

This is all I can find about Corkbark Tree in a hurry.
