    Default 150mm OD HDPE needed

Yeah I know it isn't metal but it's for a metal boat.

I'm making up my bow rollers for anchor handling. I foolishly assumed that 150mm OD HDPE or UHMWPE would be a standard item at a big plastics shop in Hobart. Hah.

Anyway I need 2 pieces of 100mm each or longer. Happy to buy it if someone has a source or some offcuts in their 'might be useful some day' collection. I've emailed E-Plas in Melbourne so I know about them - haven't got a response yet though. Nor have I from the local people, much to my amazement....

Not desperately urgent as in, I don't need it tomorrow. Just I'm about to weld up all the stainless pins, brackets etc etc and after that I'd like to paint everything that needs painting (including the stainless because it's easier than passivating & polishing it) and break down the scaffolding. So it'd be nice to slip in the rollers and call it done.

I've already thought of making them up from laminations of say 25mm thick flat pieces. I don't want to do that. PITA.

    So...... ?

We have a Dotmar around the corner from work. If you can identify what you want I could go around at lunchtime, get it and post/ freight through.
I reckon my "useful" collection stops at around 60. I'll check when I'm next out that way.

My "handy to have" UHMWPE bar stock tops out at 80mm diameter ... the local bearing place carries it, so maybe check out the local bearing places.

Thanks, I'll make a few calls/emails tomorrow. Got one reply from an ebay seller but I think I can better his price.

Got all the pieces of metal cut now. The 6 pins are sections of 316 pipe and all machined to within 0.05mm variance in length. They don't need to be any closer, in fact that tolerance is stupid seeing as the next move is to weld them all. But it's easy enough to do on the Chipmaster, so why not.

Kind of fun machining 45mm 316 at 1000 rpm and a .050" DOC. The chips are such a nice shade of red as they peel off of the cutting edge. The lathe doesn't even notice, I could easily double the DOC but I was just getting under the mill scale to make a nice surface for the roller to run on.

For your poly pipe search, try the local council. It's a common pipe size for water mains in new estates etc. offcuts are recyclable material. And as a result sometimes turn up at the local tip as well. When you buy it in kilometres of 20m sections, a 3m offcut becomes a throw away item. Well it was for me back when I was laying pipelines.

Ordered 500mm of the 150mm OD (and yes I did need solid not pipe) from E-Plas in Melbourne. They responded fast, sent a pro-forma invoice with shipping costs, took my credit card details over the phone & emailed me my receipt within an hour of the phone call.

Now to see how long the plastic takes to arrive but that's really out of their hands. I didn't ask for overnight delivery and sometimes Australia Post delivery times to Hobart are a little - slow.

So far though, all the hallmarks of a good vendor. Fast accurate responses to requests for information.

Minimum order was 250mm and cost was a touch over $200/m plus GST. That was half of what an eBay seller quoted me, FWIW. Maybe somewhere else is cheaper, but I was keeping in mind the adage 'good, cheap, fast - pick 2'. I wasn't after the absolute bottom price.

Amazing how seemingly little things like anchor bow rollers start adding up in cost.......

Thats a good price. I bought an offcut of 150mm acetyl yesterday, i could have bought a 200mm length for $165. I'm going to put that name down for next time.

FWIW they shipped fast, well packed. It arrived in under a week. Now there's a chunk of it in the Monarch lathe getting turned into black curly spirals.

It's waaay out of round but as I've never bought this stuff before, no idea if that's what I should expect or not. They gave an approx 20mm over length allowance and the stuff machines very nicely. Cutting it off on the bandsaw was interesting. I knew that blade was blunt as I'd been cutting 316 pipe and bar with it, plus is was far too fine a tooth pitch. After I badly screwed one cut I used a coarse pitch blade in the big vertical bandsaw and that was no drama.

Might actually get to cross a job off of the list soon. There are plenty more.

Speaking of which if anyone has a 3 phase 1/3 to 1/2 HP motor with a high water resistance rating - IP56 or better ideally - I need one for a hydraulic anchor winch project. I want 3 phase so I can feed it from a single phase inverter via VFD for soft start - sailing boats are none too well equipped with big power supplies.

And before anyone asks, yes I can easily mount the pump on my main engine. Have you ever seen what happens to your boat interior when a hydraulic line fails under pressure? Better to have a power pack on the foredeck. Which leads to the other question - why not use 12V DC? Because I hate high current low voltage devices with long cable runs, that's why. I've spent a lot of my life on ships, I'm unfortunately well versed on how things fail.

This is all a bit experimental, depends on finding components. I have quite a lot of hydraulic stuff already though.
