    Phil,

I will bring my newly acquired 4 inch roller along. Made in England by Educational Art and Craft Supplies of Kidderminster ( no I didn't make that up ). Cost a stiff twenty three dollars and when I unpacked it at home I found my genuine English roller was too stiff to roll. Some gentle persuasion in my 8 inch English vise has encouraged rotation.

    BT

It's getting close and I'm getting excited.

    Bob.

I was nearly going to write you yesterday, to say if you hadn’t got one yet, don’t bother. I happened to be in a shopping centre yesterday, and walked past a craft shop, so I popped my head in. I picked up one Chinese Art Culture brand. $18. Seems to work, it may be better than the speedball one.

That just has 6mm rods with one end sharpened and pushed into the centre of the roller. They keep dropping out, I’ve glued them in twice. This Art culture thing has screws into the axle. We are now dripping in brayers, I ordered two others on online, I’m yet to see.

Reason for the brayers, we will be using 4 different kinds of blue. So we don’t want to be mixing and matching.

    Gents.

If you get around the forums much, you might notice this.

    http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/2nd-melbourne-australia-scraping-class-243657/

I’ve gone out head hunting. One or two more people, would be good.

If you happen to be a member there also, and you can find something to say, I could use a bump every now and then. Just when it falls off the front page. Give the Aussie blokes a chance to see it.

That normally results in a brawl over there. Some of our Stateside cousins get bent to think anyone else can do this. Don’t gratify those with a response, leave them to me.

Just thought I’d let you know what’s going on. I’m pretty much organised, I’m machining blocks tomorrow.

    Regards Phil.

We picked up another participant last night, from this forum. Frank T. A Melbourne bloke. That makes 13 by paid deposit, still swinging on the other two. The thread at P.M didn’t stir any interest. I might give that a bump Friday. But we are looking good.

We would still squeeze one more in for a 14 – 16 sized class, any more than that and I need a bigger barbeque. Apart from that, I’m nearly organised, this time. Blocks are largely done. I need to run them under a grinder for the odd sides. EDM carbide blanks, are with the wire cutter. They are under the threat of death, to have them here on time. I’m dripping in brayers now. I have a few spare hand scrapers available also.

    Dinner.

I best book the pub for dinner, on the Saturday night, by this weekend. Would it be fair to say most of the Interstate blokes would need a feed? Ray G has organised 6 past members also for the social catch up. If I was to book a table / tables for about 18 -20. (6 & 9 interstate).

How many of you local blokes can get a leave pass to stay out for dinner? I just need a rough head count. (Not of rough heads, I mean how many can stay for a feed).

    Bumped.

If I'm there I need feeding. Pretty much continuously in fact.

    Hi all,

I'm on board, but unfortunately due to work commitments only the Saturday. This is regrettable but unavoidable. Better to have some scrapping experience than none. Looking forward to diner at the pub too.

Also, I heard a few of you talk about rollers. Are they the rollers used to spread that blue stuff around? I'm keen to get one, are they a special roller?

    Cheers,

    Simon

Yes, they lay the blue out. I wouldn’t get one just yet. I’ve lashed out on 4, B.T is bringing another brand as are some of the other guys.. I figure we compare them all and find the best of them.

The trade name for these is "brayer"... Typically used for rolling out printer's ink or print making medium.

I bought mine from Riot Art, but the roller is fixed with a pair of self-tapping screws. Since they are both rh thread one keeps unscrewing and is an annoyance. I'd look for a roller mounted with something other than threaded fasteners.

    Thanks guys,

Ive since had a look on ebay and they are relatively cheap from US but the postage seems astronomic for a small item.

If it's only the handle that's the issue, can't be too hard to replace the handle with some over engineered home made handle and just buy the roller.

Either way, I will wait until after the weekend if you guys rekon we have enough to go round.

    Cheers,

    Simon

    Default ESSDEE Roller

Here is mine, purchased locally at Jacksons Art Supplies for $23.10.

There are similar looking rollers on both Australian and British Ebay but I doubt they are of English origin. They sell for less than I paid. I mentioned previously the roller binding problem.

Greg, can't you just Loctite that screw in?

I actually never thought of that, Pete

I'll have a look later to see if that'll work

The first one I bought, that was here last Oct. Speedball brand. That doesn’t use screws. They are just like a 6 mm dowel pin, with one end sharpened to a point, and pressed into the wheel from each end. And guess what, they fall out too. I can remember gluing one of them in, maybe its the other one that gives me the xxxx’x now.

Put a little washer on the screw and then Loctite the screw in. You'll have the flashiest, and probably the only properly functioning, brayer on the day
