    Thanks John,

So would 2 lengths be right for one machine given they are 12" long?
i need to buy enough for mine and Nigels unit

One other question, where did you get your R8 collets from?

yep two lengths will do. I used one for the Z and just over half of another for the Y.

I got the quick change tool set from Frans. But I paid a lot less than what the current price is. You should be able to pick up a set of ER32 collets for an R8 spindle off ebay cheaper than buying local. Failing that Hare&Forbes sell sets.

    John,

Do you run your unit with Mach3. Does it need smooth stepper at all? Of course this depends on the PC i use, but I am lead to believe that these units have a pulse generator on the control circuits. Do you know if this is the case?

Yep it is controlled via Mach3 (which is the recommended software).

The unit will connect to your PC via a parallel cable (which should be supplied) so you need to have a PC with a parallel port. Frans can also give you a copy of the Mach3 profile for the X4.

From what I understand, the X4 standard (the blue one) does not come with a MPG only the X4+ has that (the yellow one like I have).

    Whohooo,

It finally arrived yesterday. Of course it went to the wrong address, but late last night after a short drive from Nigels i managed to fire up the spindle at least in manual mode.

Quick check shows the X axis need adjustment, so shall look at tightening the gibbs I suppose.

Next I need to get the new steel table in the shed and then the big task of lifting the unit on to it. I think a sling and the bobcat may work. John T, where did you grab your unit from when you hoisted it?

I used a few nylon straps to make up a harness under the table, base and head. It was a bit of trial and error to get the weight distribution right. The biggest problem is that it is top heavy and wants to tip. If you have a second person that can help steady it and keep it upright it isn't too bad (I had to do it alone).
