Hi folks,

Over the weekend I was keen to try out some of the collets that came with my lathe however couldn't get it to work so keen to seek your collective advice.

It all seemed to go together ok however the first issue was that I couldn't seem to get the collet to grip well enough.

Hand tight on the drawbar wasn't enough. Then I discovered the slotted wrench thing fits into the end allowing you to crank it up - but that then turns the entire spindle.

It's possible to crank from both ends using the C wrench on the spindle adaptor but that seems like kind of an odd arrangement as the C wrench is also trying to pull the adaptor out of the spindle taper.

Can someone tell me how this is meant to be tightened up and what sort of torque I should need to apply? Note it's entirely possible that some critical tool or whatever has been lost.

The above is kind of a moot point at the moment because the end of the drawbar is stripped out.

Not particularly keen to make the entire thing from scratch so was thinking I could cut the existing threaded section off and weld a new bit on. If I pre-thread the end I'm probably going to have some misalignment but realistically an internal thread up to a shoulder is beyond my current competency. I suppose if I turn the chuck by hand I'll probably avoid too many issues.

Any suggestions?
