Hi Guys,

I've just acquired an unloved 6X4 band saw from one of the engineering places that I frequent ! I was told that its been in a storeroom for several years and that it needed some attention. For what I've paid for it that isn't a problem. I've spent the last few days stripping it down to refurbish it.

These pictures are of one of the problems that I've found.

It appears that the saw has been knocked over at some point in its life and the left hand hinge bracket has been broken. Someone has tried to do a repair by making a steel cover and screwing it into the casting.

The mains lead has had the plug cut off so I suspected that the motor was dead. On testing I've discovered that the motor has been replaced ! Probably the original one was damaged when the machine hinge was broken. Anyway the replacement motor is a 1HP genuine Brooks, made in Huddersfield, motor and it runs just fine.

I think that the reason the plug was cut off was because there was no earth to the frame and the push button on/off switch was full of swarf, making the frame live. Other than the rubbish tin stand everything else seems to be in good condition.
