I have the 6,8,10 and a 4" semi universal.
They all get used at different times,I have provision for the mounting of chucks,at times when doing round work I find it easier to mount the job directly to the table.
If mounting of your jobs is of any concern towards the size you would buy,it would be best to get the 8",you should be able to mount the 8" when standing on its end in your Tee slots, just use bolts and not the studs in your clamping set.

Thanks,
As usual all comments have been invaluable and at the end of the day it's all up to me! No right or wrong answer. I think I may go to H&F on Thursday and ask to have a look/play with both and see how they go/look on their HM46 to get a "feel"
Sometimes the right choice hits you in the face once you have something in your hand to compare especially when I have never seen or handled a RT before let alone owned one!
P.S. Hey PC, a 4, 6, 8 and a 10 you're just showing off now!
Cheers,
Simon

Do you have room for a hoist/crane type setup? Maybe you could put something together that can attach to the mill cabinet and swing away when not in use. If it is just set up for the one purpose of lifting the RT on and off then I wouldn't think it would have to be too excessive.

This is a point. I think Dave j has such a setup for his RT and mill. I think if I were to go down that path I would most likely buy one of those cheapie hydraulic lift trolleys. I think Super Cheap have them. From memory they are rated to about 250Kg so perfect for such items, we have one at work and use it heaps, they are great for manual handling.
One thing I am almost certain of, I think an 8 inch will do 99% of my foreseeable work and I can't see myself needing anything larger. If I needed 10 inch RT then my biggest problem would most likely be my mill NOT the RT! Still, the 6 inch at 12Kg is attractive. How can 2 more inches can weigh 18Kg more!
It was a rhetorical question, no need to mention pie r squared!

I have a mobile trolley that houses the RT and/or shaper vice. I can set the knee to the right height, slide one on, spin it around and slide the other off. For a bench mill with no knee you would need to build the trolley the correct height. BTW the RT is a Vertex 8". I'm happy with it but haven't put any real miles on it yet. That unit is not a problem to lift on its own but there's not much to hang on to. The shaper vice OTOH is way too close to my lifting limit.

Dave,
you're out of control!
Thanks Bryan.
This is what I had in mind if I came to the crunch:

That way I can just pump it up to whatever height I need.

I use the old top of the mobile draws trick, I don't have an RT but I do have a 8 x 600 mag chuck and
an old dividing head that really makes the old sphincter muscle pucker up, even with 2 people, wheeling
and sliding makes life easy
I have thought about moving the mill closer to my larger lathe and putting a lifting jig in between the two.

H&F have those for $176, albeit max lift of 226kg but same lifting height.

I use the same trolley every now and then when picking freight up from the airport, they are solid little trolleys but getting used to the rear wheels being the swivel ones is hard if you are used to the front ones swiveling.

It's funny you mention it. What started the whole purchasing a RT thing was Michael. He knew I was interested in a RT (have been for a year or so) and he saw an almost exact same setup on gumtree (8 inch vertex with a 125mm chuck) for $500 in Adelaide so he PM'd me with the info. Money being a bit tight, I discounted the idea and it never went further, until I mentioned to the wife and she said "well go and get it!" Well I nearly fell over! It was then that I looked on H&F to get the price of a new 8 inch vertex ($420 in special) Michael was able to chase up a freight quote to get it to me from Adelaide which was very reasonable but in the end it was only about $20 cheaper than buying new at H&F with their 3 day special. The guy showed little to no interest in moving on price.
Anyway to cut a long story short, I got the GW used to the idea of a $500 purchase and now I'm getting a RT for $420 (if I get the 8 inch) so now she is even more wrapped at the price!
Thanks for the link. The auction finishes in 6 days, that's after the H&F sale. I may contact him with an offer and see how we go.
Thanks,
Simon

Hi Ben,
I have just had another look at that RT. I think it must be a 10 inch. It seems to have 6 T slots. The seller says it weighs about 80Kg so it's either a chuck made from depleted Uranium or it's bigger than an 8 inch! I have sent a message to the seller but I may have to pass on it anyway. An 8 inch may well be on the verge of too big and a 10 inch is definately too big for my needs!
Cheers,
Simon
