I have seen RHS used to mean "round hollow section " (i.e. what we know as a tube). But what you have suggested are, IMHO, the more usual meanings of the abbreviations.

    RHS - Rectangular Hollow Section

    SHS - Square Hollow Section

Round hollow section doesn't really exist - it's just tube or pipe
Have a nice day - Cheers

Always thought the same thing. However, recently looking into purchasing some 100 x 100 (ie square hollow section) I found references to it on manufacturer's sites as RHS. Further investigation revealed that RHS can mean Rolled Hollow Section and therefore include round, square, rectangular (and presumably others).

I for one intend to stick to RHS as rectangular hollow section - it was what I was learned as an apprentice in an large-scale industrial environment.

This website is the one I was referring to: http://www.scottmetals.com.au/rhsptd.html

A quick Google returned a lot more results for RHS = Rolled Hollow Section than I would have thought. Hell of a lot of results for "Rectangular Hollow Section" too, including Smorgon Steel Tube Mills (now Australian Tube Mills) http://www.austubemills.com/html/pro...struct_rhs.htm

Guess you can take your pick.

Most merchants in SA have RHS as rolled hollow section, we don't seem to use SHS for anything as far as I can see

The way I have seen it is that steel places use RHS = rolled hollow section to identify the range of RHS-Rectangles and RHS-Squares.

Square Hollow Section and Rectangular Hollow Section seems to be more of a hardware store colloquial term.

I have also heard 'box section' used a bit - First time I heard it was when I stupidly asked the hardware guy about getting some RHS, only to get a blank look, the penny finally dropped after some explaining (ie I want a piece of steel tube, with a square cross section) and he condescendingly blurts out "you want box section" as if I have used some rare and unusual term.

    Yep I'm with Browny.

RHS is rolled hollow section in large parts of the steel world. You differentiate between the profiles by the dimension you ask for.....this really makes perfect sense if you think about it.
two lengths of RHS thanks 25x25(or 25 square) or 75x50 or as the case may be.

Rounds sections are still actually RHS but we ask for pipe but AFAIK not DOM pipe which is tube steel.

SHS is for the punters who actually think RHS = rectangular hollow section

Should we then go into bar stock which is round square flat or deformed (and hex) in HRS or CRS.

Uh oh, now you are reminding me of the time I made a big mistake and watched a guy cutting up a $720 piece of 3" diameter x 6m stainless pipe for me when I meant to ask for tube...lucky he didn't make me pay for it and just put it on the rack with "the boss wont be happy". It still gives me the cold sweats thinking about it - am now very careful what I ask for.
