I had a good look at my feed stop system tonight and I am convinced that it is designed for this purpose. If I move the lever towards the engage position gently while the lathe is running all I feel is gentle bumping. No feel of grinding gears at all. More like a wobble.

Also as I have said before it takes about 0.170 inch movement from when slack is taken up til when disengagement occurs. I measured this with a DI. This is 4.3mm. In the other direction, from when I can feel the bumping of the mechanism I set the gap to the apron to about 1mm. When turning the lever further this gap was enough to engage. So the mechanism is stopping out past the activation point by about 3mm after disengaging.

Something like a plate that when flipped up will go over centre and stay there, then when you need it just give it a bump and it will come down into the right position.
As I was looking at it I realised I already had this arrangement set up but on the rods.

    Attachment 211242

Raised position to set the stop point.

    Attachment 211243

    Lowered position for machining.

I just need to arrange the correct steps on the apron edge to line up with the extension rod, fine tune it and tidy it up.

    Nice job Dean

I'm glad there is no grinding of gears. I looked on the lathes.co.uk site and all the nuttalls had that rod. Now you can just set a long cut and go for a break!

    Hi Dean,
Whats the bed length on your lathe?
Have you thought about adding an extra shaft so you can have auto stop anywhere?

It is about 30 inches as far as I can tell. It is a funny size considering how massive the bed and headstock is but I have yet to need longer. Will come eventually. I have not done much long stuff yet so the thought had not yet been considered. You will get me into trouble!

I heard they are building a replacement for the hubble telescope. One that will be much more powerful. Ask me again when I have gained some time on this and I will let you know.

I thought I should post an update on this thread. If you have followed a couple of my recent threads you may know that I am expecting to obtain a newer lathe which will make the many expected improvements on this lathe pointless. Maybe its new owner will continue the process.
