Adjusting a test indicator contact point
I've been using a mitutoyo test indicator I brought on ebay.
However the contact point is pointed in a impracticable direction.
When used on the fixed jaw of my milling vice the dial is pointed downwards.
I'm hoping one of the metalworking forum members can advise me of a method of adjusting the points direction.

Just grip the contact point and move it to where you want it. There is a clutch(?) in there.
If you're not game I can make a video to show you.

Thanks
Well how about that!
Ive been poring over mitutoyo websites and reading useless manuals and nowhere is there any mention of how to adjust the points angle.

Don't worry, I was the same when I got my first dial test indicator... I was wondering how the hell do I move the lever... Being a precision instrument, grabbing the lever and yanking it around was something i never considered.. Then you look inside at how they are built and you understand you are not damaging the mechanism by doing it as it goes up against a stop at the end of the travel...

Hi Stuart,
You need to re-shoot the video on that, put up a long scrolling title, add some cheesy background music.. scrolling credits... pad it out to at least a minute.
Keith Fenner, TubalCain or others would stretch it out to a half hour show.. with some long winded discussion...

Yep, i'll put my hand up and say it felt like an unnatural way to adjust a "precision instrument" when I first used one!

I'm tipping it will show up on Channel 7 Sunrise show soon!

Me too...
I remember being dumbfounded when I first saw someone crank the probe to position. All of my cherished notions of tool care and velvet-lined toolboxes were crushed.

I don't feel too bad now. For ages I was doing all these fancy set ups just to get the DTI in position and then performing gymnastics so I could read it. I was thinking I would need to buy a few more DTIs with different lever angles.
Then one day I bumped the DTI. When my shock and horror abated, it all became clear...
RE the video, don't forget to make a version with an imperial DTI.
