The one I used to have had plain bearings. It also had about 1mm play in the headstock but it enabled me to learn the basics of lathe use. Sold it to a mate who is still using it.

My Advance is one of the later ones after the maker retired and sold the business, it's plain cast iron bearings with ball thrust bearings to take the sideways load. Can you post some photos?.

Lathe is still in pieces. A fair bit of the parts have been cleaned up and repainted but bed is still bare. I'll post a pic or two of the bed tonight if I get around to it.

Curious to know if anyone else has the Tapered Bearing type and maybe even when it was made.

Well if the bed has a serial number on the end that starts with "AS" then it was made after Bert Kirby sold the business to Alfred Steward Ltd. in 1962.

This one had a beefier headstock casting so it's probably tapered roller like yours: The Advance Lathe

Yep same as first link. Forgot I had that bookmarked so that makes two I know of. Has a serial number, but will have to check again as i can't remember what it is right now.

Same as what first link?. It's the same as the lathe in the first link??, so that'd make it 1970's or so.
