Thanks for trying to puff me up fellas but the mill did the work, I only steered it.
Looking at the work you blokes have done, I realize I'm just dragging my feet.
I will pursue the O1 option Ray. Where do I start?
Bob.

Hi BT,
I'll drop a piece in the mail for you, and you can machine it to the shape and size you want, then send it back and I'll heat treat it and surface grind it to the final dimension.
When you machine it leave the thickness oversize by 0.5mm to allow for any warping in the heat treatment process. Also, don't sharpen the primary bevel, leave the edge about 1mm thick, it will be ground and honed after heat treating.
Regards
Ray

Yeah I can't recall quite why I decided on D2. I know there are a lot of differing opinions out there, so I just went through the motions of reading as much as I could. I have some Hock irons, they're very good, but I personally feel there are still better.
Anyway, here's a link to a blade maker using D2 for his blades, from our very own woodworking brothers up above Plane Iron makers?
Bob I'm in Perth a few times this next week, I'm hoping to train in a dojo there some nights, but otherwise we really must try to catch up one time so I can check out this latest masterpiece of yours.

Hello Ray,
Before you do anything I need to check the plane's width and mouth dimensions. I thought I had based it all on the original Norris blade thickness of 3/16" but anything could have happened.
I have no way of holding the blade securely to machine anything off the thickness (unless I glued it to the lathe faceplate). Does it require thinning?
And more importantly, could you send me a PM regarding the cost of the material, your services and your preferred method of payment.
Regards
Bob.

Hi PeteF,
There was a group purchase project here for D2 plane blades a year or so back..

Bob, Derek Cohen is in Perth, you could make contact with him and get some additional opinions on steel types, he has done some evaluations on the CPM10V and a few other powdered metal steels.

Vielen dank fur das geschenk Ray.
The CD will be copied onto my Ipod tonight. I have yet to unwrap the steel. I have left that to savour tonight. I will tackle the blade this weekend.
I re read your plane making story this morning. I am leaning towards a No. 4 conversion of the 22 year old TIG welded bronze body after viewing your creation.
Peter McBride mentioned Jim Kingshott's planemaking book in your plane thread. Do you have a copy?

Hi BT,
No problem, always happy to help. That Jim Kingshott book is worth getting, I believe, I must try and find one.
As for the 20 year old project, yes, it's probably aged sufficiently by now, to be stable enough for the next few steps of the process...
Gotta love unfinished projects... I must do, there's enough of them..
Regards
Ray

Blade Made
Ray mailed me a length of O1 tool steel for the blade with the instructions that I make the blade and post him back the offcut and the blade so he could slip it into his oven for heat treating. I had to bowl it over this weekend because I take off for Berlin in a week. After a bit of online searching for primary bevel angles, I settled for 25 degrees.

A quarter it is Pete. Ray said he would surface grind it to the desired thickness. The original is 3/16" but I reckon 5mm would be fine. I will make the plane suit the blade.
BT
Edit : Maybe it could be thicker. I seek guidance from others versed in this matter.

Hi BT,
That blade looks perfect, almost like it was made for it... (oh wait, it was... )
It's starting to look like a seriously nice plane.
If you post that blade to me, I should have it back in your letter box before you get back from Germany..
Regards
Ray
PS Thanks for the offer of the Kingshott book, you are too generous, greatly appreciated.
