Titan is a one man operation, or was when I dealt with them.

I got a crap lathe (TL180V). TM20LV which is passable and about what I expected for the money, some odd "features" like the Z carriage is reversed / wrong way up

Crickey! Not much of a wrap for titan in this thread. I nearly bought a mill from them about 3 years ago. Their website did look impressive and thought that they "looked" the best of all the 45 size mills going around. That was before I realised that all 45 size mills from China are pretty much the same. Anyway, I imported one direct from the manufacturer in China and shipped it out here sight unseen and certainly got a better deal and a slightly better quality machine than Steve. Maybe I was very lucky?

I recall somebody posting a link to a YouTube video about an experience with Titan some time ago. the guy in the video was not overly impressed if I remember correctly.

Hmmm "Titan Machinery's customer service link" ... well I can't read gibberish nor understand it especially given that it is an Australian company and Australian website (what's the go with that???) so maybe I am delusional... Just had higher "hopes" for our country's "code of ethics/practices"... Has Australia really become this bad where people just expect this crap???

Thanks for all the help, support and info!

Thanks for the reply! Does your TM20LV have solid castings though?

I am not expecting a super high precision mill for this price but is solid castings too much to ask for? I don't mind scrapping the a bit to make them "true" but they need to be solid be it for a hobby machine or "excellent heavier duty machine".

Yes, no obvious problems with the castings affecting the ways. I haven't measured them however.

Cool! Sounds like you got a good one then. I was expecting to have to scrape the ways to make them straighter/true/square etc but I really expected them to be solid castings. See how it this goes. I feel as though everyone is thinking I am expecting a "high end" super high precision machine for the price, but all I expected was solid castings and a acceptable working machine as per the descriptions along with all the tooling that's listed in the manual that the mill is supposed to come with to actually come with it that will work as intended. Ie a mill.

Thanks all for the info, advice, help, support... and the laughs!

I hope this all ends well but I'll leave it at this now until it's done and dusted and will let you all know what the end result is when it happens. I am off as expected but don't want to cause dramas as they may come good still. (High hopes ha ha ha)

    Cheers all and fly Safeish!

    Hi all,

PayPal want me to have a "third party" look at the machine to verify its defects, clearly not as described, and a quote on how much it will cost to repair the machine to what it should be as per the sellers description... Does anyone know of anyone in far North Queensland that can do this for me? It is going to cost an absolute packet to have done but I will be going to the ACCC to have the funds reimbursed eventually once the matter is resolved.

I am am in a bit of a bind at the moment as we have been down in Sydney for my father in law. He has been in hospital for the past month with terminal cancer (liver, lung and bone cancer...) and sadly passed away this morning at 1:30am. At least his extremely traumatic suffering is finally over though . The time limit PayPal have given me for the case ends on the 24th of October which is the day of his funeral. The hospital have written some letters for us for work, flights, etc's... I have sent a copy of one of these through to them to try and have the time limit extended as I need to be here (Sydney) for my wife, son and family and can not get back in time to meet the paypal dead line. All I am getting back from PayPal is automated emails... Fuct times :/....

I have asked on several occasions if an official statement from a Police officer will do regarding the defects etc as I can have a friend show them the machine (who has been helping me with it, moving it, etc...) but a police officer is not qualified in engineering or milling etc... Also they want a serial number but like I have mentioned here before, there is no serial number or date of manufacturer stamped on the machine where it states "serial number/DOM" ...

Does anyone one know of anyone who can be a "qualified third party" and write a quotation or whatever that PayPal want in the North Queensland area? Would a "fitter and turner" be a suitable person for the job? Is there someone on here that is qualified to do an appraisal or whatever from the photographs of the machine? Do we even have these professionals that do this sort of stuff in Australia anymore??? Like I have said, I can have a police officer verify the photographs of the major defects etc to ensure it is all legal and above board etc. Not sure how else to go about this apart from skipping paypal and go directly through the ACCC and fair trading? Bit lost at the moment... :/ What a f()ck around!

Thanks for the help and advice!

    Kind regards

    Steve

PS... The "twin turbine wingsuit" comment at the end of the last post was just a joke...

PPSS... Never buy a machine without personally checking it out yourself first!

    Steve ,
What about contacting the closest Tafe ( Cairns I would imagine) that has a fitting and turning section. A fitting and turning teacher might be persuaded to travel up to Mission beach and write a report on your machine. If not, said teacher might be able to point in the right direction to an appropriate person.

I am thinking along the lines of someone who might do machinery maintenance for the Tafe and other engineering businesses.

Some one like that may be well suited to do this for you.

    Steve,

Just a suggestion - have you thought about trying Northern Iron and Brass at Wangan?

No idea if they would be interested in or prepared to make an inspection and provide an estimate for the necessary repairs to satisfy Paypal, but they are close to you, have an iron foundry and, according to their website, a modern, well equipped machine shop.

    Regards,

    Frank.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for the help!

I did contact all the suggested businesses, a cnc/machinery repair shop in Melbourne and also found two local engineers to look at it also, (I was forced to fly back for a day for it but was back just in time for the funeral...) but, all said it has major structural defects and will cost more than $5000+ to repair. They also gave me written reports/quotes for this also. Titan Machinery are still saying "it's just how they are" even though non of these defects were listed in their descriptions or to expect and accept them... The engineers I spoke to/showed the machine to both said Titan Machinery have a really bad name in the business for their dodgy machinery and customer service and are well known for selling "boat anchors" like this throughout their whole product lines... Should have spoken to the engineers first hey... Through speaking with my barrister and lawyers, as the seller/s (Titan Machinery, ebay.com.au and paypal.com.au as paypal are an ebay company) are not complying with Australian Laws I will be entitled to full compensation for this whole "ordeal" including all costs incurred, time spent sorting this out, other losses, etc.

Thanks again for all the help and info! Will keep you posted....

    Cheers

I hope you get fully compensated, as it should not have gotten to this point. Very disappointing.

I must admit I have always had success getting faulty goods fully refunded (including freight/return freight) when I've paid for them using Paypal. It isn't always a walk in the park to achieve that though, and you need to show them that you know your rights as a consumer.
    Cheers.

I sincerely wish you success and all the luck you need, and yes please keep us posted.

I do however fear, when it gets tough the one-man company may just find it easier to fold. Conveniently after disposing of all assets, of course. Leaving you lonely with the legal bill.
The same person may then open a month later next door with a new name, and maybe the wife as new manager. There will always be new customers for a Rolex at a quarter the price.
