Default advice on metal router table covering

    Hi,

I'm in the inner city sydney area and wanted to surface my router table with some flat steel or not sure if they produce thin iron in sheets (not familiar with any sort of metalworking since I was a teenager so pls don't laugh).

    • will be supported by 35mm of formply
    • needs to be sufficiently thick to accept a magnetic switch type fixture that will still have a decent grip
    • flat enough to do reasonably accurate work (doesn't have to be machined flat but would be nice)
    • size approx 600 x 685
    • need to be able to machine an opening to fit router plate so not too brittle or thick

My question is- what should I be asking for and where?

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance on the matter,

    Garth

    Hi Garth,
3mm thick mild steel sheet on top of 35mm would be fine and hold a magnet fine, it will also be reasonably easy to cut a hole in it. A jig saw with a metal cutting blade will cut the hole, just take it easy with a slow speed on the jig saw and use a bit of oil on it if you can to keep the blade cool and lubricated.
A sheet metal place should be able to help you out with a piece cut to size, if not your local steel merchant.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply- was just unsure as to whether rolled steel was flat enough for this (I remember some standard mild stuff we worked with when I was an electrical fitter 20 yrs ago being either cambered or lumpy) and though there might have been something that had a more 'finished' surface on one/both sides that might have had a particular name.

The magswitch user notes admit some movement with excessive pressure for the pro version on a standard cast iron table (I would presume), so wasn't sure if a thin plate would exacerbate this (ie not enough 'bite').

I remember reading a thread on the net ages ago regarding plate thickness and magnetic strength but cannot remember the magic search terms atm

    Cheers,
    Garth
