Age groups of people interested in metal working
I ran some figures off the net for my YouTube videos which you may find interesting. The primarily niche videos are mostly machining/metal work related.
It shows the ages and genders etc of viewers for the last 30 days.
gender and ages.jpg
The worrying bit is the big decline in viewers over 65.
Either they're not very computer savvy or they're falling off their perch
I'm getting close to that group and hope to stay around a bit longer.
Looks like women in Oz aren't into this stuff very much. Canada and the Netherlands lead the womens brigade.
Cheers

Hi Rob,
There is one small flaw in that.....that is the age and gender YouTube thinks you are based on what videos you watch. The data is held say they can target advertising at you. There is a way of finding out who google and YouTube thinks you are, just google "who google thinks you are" or somesuch. You can opt out of them collecting data an time.
Cheers,

OK just did the Google and I see what you mean. Haven't picked up on that before. Always learning.
Apparently I'm a bit younger than I thought I was.
Looks like the profiles are rubbery at best.
Oh well, maybe there's some resemblance to truth in the data.
Cheers

So maybe all those older viewers are just thought to be younger by YouTube. That is good news Rob.
I find this whole question interesting because I just love to stuff up plans like that anytime I can. I drive into a service station the wrong way just because I can!
Google works out your location from your ip. I am on satellite and my location gets reported to be anywhere from Adelaide to Brisbane. I have no intention of informing them.
We went to hire something in town after arranging it by phone first. They had our details already written down. Where did you get them from we asked? Internet was the reply. Don't believe everything you read. A long time later we found out what had happenned. Powercor had our location address wrong but were still sending the bills to the right address. When the property next door was sold we got the final bill sent to us. Thats how we found out there mistake. I suggested they fix the problem (address) and was told they cannot do that. I persuaded them they could. It involved a lot of choice words that cannot be repeated here. They discovered they can change it.
We have problems from people, mainly in business trying to ring us on our mobiles. We don't give out the numbers to anyone but close friends. In SWMBO's case this amounts to about three people in the world. Then we get complaints from these business people that we are not answering our phone. They get the number from the internet and then follow the usual city persons belief that a mobile phone is always on and in the owners pocket just ready to be answered. They cannot comprehend why this does not work in our case. My phone does not leave the car when I get home and it is turned off.
I just had a look at googles ads settings. It wasn't far off except I often look up stuff on behalf of SWMBO so this did skew the results a bit. LOL. I also opted out of "interest-based Google Ads Across the Web" while I was there. A waste of time on there behalf as I detest ads and If I get bored of them I just leave. I have knowingly clicked on only one sponsered add on google because I could not find that site in the body of the page and I wanted to go there. I ignore adds. On YouTube I download the videos and keep the sound off untill I watch them later. Ads are one of the vampires of society. When I turn on the tv every 6 months or so I can watch for about an hour. After I have seen the same ad twice I switch the tv off.
I don't mind reading catndogs from engineering etc type stores.

Why not edit to poison their data.
Changed mine to female +65 and added interest in kitchen appliances, shopping, motorcycle racing, dance & electronic music. :P

Sounds like a plan Josh.
Actually I may have stumbled upon something here. It is 17th of the month. Internet download allowance finishes at midnight so I try to use up any left, downloading videos from YouTube. Ewan sent me a a huge pile of Tubalcain vids and shortly after that my allowance went up from 4G to 10G so I can afford to download some.
I am getting mostly Keith Fenner stuff. Started to set some up tonight ready for downloading later and I noticed that there were no ads at the start of the vids. It has gone from a few ads to an ad before every vid and suddenly none at all. Is this because I opted out of "interest-based Google Ads Across the Web"? I thought it meant I would just get random ads!
I wish it was that easy to turn them off elsewhere.
What have other forumites experienced regarding ads on YouTube?

People go on about Google, but the real demon is Facebook.
Pure data dredging. And people willingly offer up great information for identity theft.
I bet the NSA have a great time with the data.
I have a facebook page, only to keep in touch with rellies, but it is made out for my old black Kelpie dog (junior).
Hobbies include ball chasing, eating, sleeping, more sleeping, walkies - you get the picture.
Currently unemployed with no steady relationship
Facebook recently announced they were going to close down all these suspect accounts, but mine is stil going.

I cannot comment on Facebook as the one time I clicked on a link that lead me there I hit the close tab button so quick.......
I have read the reports on the net and I will not have anything to do with them. Facebook is regarded as having some of the worst net safety policies to be found on the WWW. I actually do not have anything to do with any sort of social networking except for this forum and whirlpool forum. Whirlpool is only for infomation anyway. They can get narky there. I don't even frequent the renovation forum anymore. Too many opinionated......nuff said. Just occasionally there appears an opinionated view on this forum too. Hard to believe but true.LOL
In relation to using up my data allowance as per previous post, I proceeded to select a heap of K F vids and then started the download queue going. I kept watching off and on. By the time my IP hit the brakes on speed (from 25km/h to 2km/h LOL) I had downloaded 400% of the allowance I had left. For most people downloading an extra 1.2G would be ho hum material but for me it is great considering I had a limit of 4G per month not long ago. On satellite big allowances cost huge money. Roll on the NBN LOL.

OK all you paranoia types, what disasters should befall me when I view a Face Book video posted on this site?
I have always wondered as I avoid social networking as well, Invitations getting reclassified as spam & reported.

Your computer will start making choking sounds and shrivel up before your eyes.
Just joking
One big risk with Facebook is that any of your hundreds (or is that thousands) of friends can send you an invitation to view something that is in fact malware.
So you accept the link as legit, click on it and BAM, a bit down the track the PC shows signs that it's infected/locked/demands money to be fixed etc etc.
One way they do this is by buying actual advert/comment space for a legitimate product on a news media or similar web site and down the track a bit direct the link to a malware downloader/installer. You click on the link and it doesn't work, you suspect nothing, but you've just got infected. That easy.
The type of subject they use in the link is something that casual web browsers would refer to friends - horses, antiques, collectables, cars etc
Seen this happen to rellies and I had the job of fixing the mess.
I've not seen any Facebook videos on this site, only YouTube (which are quite safe).
