Hi Darren,
The motor had the capacitors hanging off but still wired. Me and a friend plugged it in and well........
The motor would not get up to full speed and it started smoking rather quickly.
Also some nast bearing/grinding sounds comming from it. But for 900 odd bucks I think its a good platform for a conversion.

Sorry to see the damage.
I would be chasing warranty or some money back on the broken/damaged parts, because if they can get away with it they will unless someone speaks up. From what I read on the site the warranty is on the whole lathe except the motor.
If they don't come to the party, I can see a good spot for a sticker or something to cover their name up.
I know it will take more time, but one thing about the kit not fitting is it will cost you a lot less and you will know every part inside out if something goes wrong, which it usually does in a conversion.
I won't be doing one of these lathe myself, but will be watching on with interest to see how you design it all. I saw a lathe that had the stepper/servo motor down on the right side of the apron instead of sticking out the front which I thought was a good idea as it kept it out of the way. It ran off a belt up to the cross slide screw.
