    Default AL960B Belt Change

The latest issue of Model Engineers Workshop (#186) has a 2 page article by a bloke who made a quick change method to shift the belt on his AL960B using A-series belts instead of the B-series that are standard and new pulleys.

I've only had a quick look but it would seem it would need holes drilled and tapped into the main gearbox and mods to the gear-train cover.

I generally leave mine in the low-belt range as it's a pain to change the belt position often largely because the 127/120 gear has to come off each time.

It's worth a look in any case.

keep my lathe on the low gear as well.
when making the inner change gear cover tried to come up with a system that used 2 belts with the unused belt being placed over a type of hanger to hold the belt off the pulley, so the inner cover does not need to be moved when changing speed.
decided against it as it's easy to move the cover.

found that when changing the belt with the change gears in place that twisting the belt 90° allowed it to slip into the high gear behind the change gear.
prefer to buy another belt about 10mm longer to make it easier to slip off the pulley in the first place,

    Hi Gavin, Lather,
I usually always leave mine in the lower range on my Chinese 18 speed machine.
To change them over it's only a matter of walking one belt at the time because I don't tighten them right up so they can slip in case of an accident, though it's never slipped.

It sounds like the AL960 is a lot harder with having to remove a gear to do it, does anyone have a picture handy to show the set up of one of these lathes?

would post a pic, except would need to take of the change gear shield.
found it easy to get onto the high gear pulley when the belt has been taken completely off the motor pulley.
this allows the belt to be turned sideways when placed onto the high speed pulley without taking off the change gear, probably the belt height is less than the width.
