    Hi Ben,
If your talking about cast bases like on drill and things like that, then no. Most of the Chinese cast has a lot of rubish in it that makes it even worse.

i would say it all comes down to the material it's made from...ally is like steel you get it in umpteen grades
mag wheels for instance gives one an insight as to what would be required for strength...then you have the fry pan

Depends on what attributes are needed in the final piece. For mass production of items, casting is cheaper than fabrication, and a well designed casting can be just as good, if not better than a fabricated item in most respects...but a lot of that depends on good design in the first place.

If you are designing something to be cast, it's better to design it initially as a casting rather than try to slavishly re-create a fabricated item.

"Die cast" is a common name for an aluminium and zinc alloy (pot metal) that is used in the manufacturing industry for cheap parts .
One application that comes to mind is the electric motor end plates in washing machines motors and gearbox housings .
The ally zinc alloy is rather brittle and won't take alot of abuse.

Cast aluminium is a different kettle of metal , there are many different alloy combinations available so you would need to work out the stresses and find an alloy that will exceed them .

It would also depend on the complexity of the part being made.
