am I really a burglar, robber.....or what
if I told you what I paid for this you'd probably call me something worse
went to an semi engineering semi junk yard ( just for you Adelaidians....south rd croydon park...redwood machinery) that I had not visted for around 8 months or so...(usually went there at least once every couple of months) and found this...must have been there all the time as he wanted to get rid of it and based on where it was I can understand why it still there
And dont worry guys ...I have done a really really good search of that place after that find and I think I can report that there is nothing else!!
now what am I going to do with it?

Redwood Machinery's an interesting place, there's so much stuff in such a small place I doubt whether the owners even know what they have in stock. How on earth they would get some of the stuff out is beyond me. The downside is that for some unfathomable reason they decided many years ago that it wasn't worth opening on Saturday mornings so some of us wage slaves have trouble getting there when they are open.

I think I'm a bit obtuse but what actually is it?

I notice in your picture that the belt guard cover underneath the housing is upside down. Did you turn it over for clearance? and do you have a problem with it rubbing on the ram when tilting the head?
The first couple of mills I got had just flat plates under there and would rub on the ram as I tilted the head, but this mills one is recessed like yours (but the other way around) for clearance when tilting the head. It gets in the way a bit on the inside when belt changing but after I raise the head I will be able to turn it over like yours without any problems. Or I might just make a new flat one.
I also see you have a few pencil marks on the ram worm drive. If you take the spacer/collar off ram, clean out the worm and shim it up properly, it makes it a lot easier when adjusting the tram without the backlash that is in there as they come standard. I just used a few thin washer either end between the thrust bearings and the housing.
There is a picture of the worm in post 11 here

Also seeing your down feed handle reminded me of this good right up of a single quill down feed handle using a Bridgeport style speed handle. I have been wanting to make one up myself.

Its a camel back straight edge ,or "bridged straight edge " as I was taught .
Its used as a reference in scraping for testing flat surfaces against like machine ways and tables .
Wish I could get my hands on one.I was always going to "borrow" the one we had at one place I worked ,as it was never used .
Just never got around to relocating it.

for you SA guys he has some swivel mill vices there with marked Vertex
1 was a 5 inch and the other 6? there was another one but i didnt see a name on it...it looked too dirty to pull out and look...didnt want to get my hands dirty..lol
they were dirty ...shop soiled..but otherwise appeared new!
I suspect he has had them there for some time as i had to look very hard to work out the price...$279 for the smaller and i think it was $359 for the larger
They are do not appear to be listed in the current Vertex product manuals ( which Vertex kindly sent me at no cost) but look similar to VK or VJ model....the 3rd one was slightly different again but then it might not had been Vertex anyway
The Vertex decal was on the front (back???) jaw...non handle end
If they are of same quality as the current range of Vertex stuff then they should be good stuff?
