    Default Angle Plate - H and F M245.

I ventured into Hare and Forbes's relocated showroom in Belmont yesterday and was tempted by one of the large angle plates on display. Only tempted. The weight of the thing discourages shipping if an alternative could be found elsewhere.

Does anyone own one and if so, does it possess the accuracy suggested in the sales blurb? M245 | Precision Ground Open End Angle Plate | machineryhouse.com.au

Obviously, armed with the ex Gregory Q Czech surface plate, it could be rendered square with some judicious scraping but that's down the track.

Is it my imagination or has H&F prices seem less extreme then what they used to...

I am tempted to buy a 6" machine vice off them..

    Hi BT,

I daresay they could always be improved with a little careful scraping, but I'd buy one and check. Of course if you really want it square, you'll have to buy three to check properly..

    Regards
    Ray

PS... AFTER, you get a good surface plate to reference off of course.

I think this: I have a pair of Wing Bros angle plates made not 10km from my house about 20-30 years back. Phil Machtool ground them square for me for use in the Melbourne scraping class (and they'll always be on call for subsequent classes owing to the 3.2 metric weekends of scraping that saved me).

So get one, and go armed with a slab to some engineering joint on a Friday to see of they won't do you a solid on making them accurate. Phil did mine to 2µm, and that was as measured in a non-climate controlled room. They are probably better than that.

I used one the other day to drill Mike's Rivett 608 apron* for his thread dial. Square, true, on size was the result. I cannot imagine not having a shop standard for square now that I've been so conspicuously spoilt.
