I was cutting a taper the other day with an insert tool. It was really odd - the finish was like a mirror at the start of the cut (deep because it was the small end of the taper) but at the large end of the taper (shallow DOC) the finish deteriorated. Most annoying!

    Carbide can be really annoying.

Bang it in hard and deep on steel and you can get a perfect mirror finish.

Do a lighter cut on the same job and it feathers like crazy.

Do not want to hi-jack this thread, so will just post these couple...

It is not a HLV-H but a DV-59 second operations lathe..

Top speed 3500rpm... has 3 jaw chuck plus the 5C collet chuck thingie..

Paid more then I would have liked, but the chap that just wanted the steel base really wanted the steel base... It was about the same I paid for my Hercus from the local high school..

Has a bit of flight rust, nothing i would call severe on the machine though.... I suspect it has been stored in the semi open in an open sided shed... No idea where it came from the auctioneer did not know....

I have run it, has some minor problem with the speed adjustment, but is quiet...spindle seems good...

Congratulations, you've caught up to me but only because I sold one... think I'll sell another one as well soon.

I think that 4 milling machines, counting the one I bought a couple weeks ago, it sufficient.

    Looks good.

Thanks for the pics. Lathes always throw up a few curve balls.

I spent a coupla hours today machining out a pulley centre for a friend.

It had a key way slot full length and the boring bar overhang was rather excessive.

Very slow going - one snag on the keyway and it was gunna be curtains.

Got there in the end, but risky business. Needed a beer afterwards.

I spent yesterday and today making up the 2 missing gears for the machine, a 45t and a 35t. As luck had it i have the right gear cutters so it was just a case of making a new arbor to hold the gears on and machining the gears themselves. The 45t is on now and runs just as quietly as the 54t that was on the machine. Success!

I also did not get a single chuck key with it, or a key for the cams, so whilst the DH was on the mill i made 3 new ones up. The steel was recycled who knows what and i couldn't get a good finish on it. There is always next time....

It gets worse Simon, if i set the cross slide and then start the machine, the slide moves in by the backlash, about .05mm. How will i cope?

    Cheers,
    Ew

You are the fastest machinist around :

How did you do the internal keyways in those gears ? Looks like steel not cast iron you used ?

    Hi Mike,
Yes the gears are steel, thats what the existing ones are. I was going to set the shaper up for the keyways but there is a mountain of stuff in front of her so i ended up doing it on the lathe. I reckon it took almost as long as cutting the teeth. There was a bit of filing for fit, the keys are 5mm and the boring bar i used takes 3/16" HSS bits. I cut a V first then went through with the flat cutter so it was not trying to cut full width.

Re the shortcomings of the new lathe. That's what you get for being cheap.

    Cheap price; cheap quality.
