Hello Peter,
I will be interested to follow the progress of your arbor making. I have numerous photos of SIP and STP arbored heads and like I mentioned earlier, I photographed all the stages of my head's dis and reassembly. Let me know if you need anything. Removing the stop pin on vernier ring will make the ring more useful. The photo below is one of Tien Nguyen Binh's, the bloke I bought my head from.

Finished
Abandoned the too hard 1060 CTC arbor and used 1045. Ray will be shaking his head but the soft option worked.

Hi Ray,
The only useable cutter that came with the head is the one pictured. It's a lefty. The head accommodates 10mm diameter shank tooling and most of my boring bars are 3/8" to suit my little Craley boring head. I purchased a cheap ( 21 bucks including postage from HK !!) 12 mm shanked SCLCR 09.... boring bar with the intention of cutting it down in length and diameter to suit the Kaiser. I'll probably buy a few more if the initial one works well enough along with a CTC left hander for inside out facing.
Michael's Kaiser came with a HSS insert holder. I wouldn't mind making or modifying a conventional boring bar to arrive at something similar to MG's.
Here's a page from Kaiser's brochure showing the range of toolholders available when they made these heads along with some toolholders Tien had accompanying a latter model ISO 40 arbored Kaiser he sold recently on eBay de.

Hi Bob,
Good to see you have at last a workable solution for the boring head. From the great photos I initially thought the 10mm dia tooling would be too flexible but looking at the pictures you posted of the other tools I see they have reduced shanks and good sized shoulders. Look forward to seeing the finish it produces.

Facing 4E
This may be deemed cheating because it's pretty easy to achieve a nice finish on cast iron but this is better than I was hoping for.

If that is better than what you wanted then isn't that a waste of time.

I'm going to hazard a guess that PC doesn't have a boring and facing bar...

Don't guess too much,if its more than what is required then it is a waste of time.
Who ever decided what was required already new the surface finish required, anymore is not warranted.

Am i the only one who get the feeling that PC and Tongleh would make good pals?
Good to see the Kaiser finally making some chips Bob, and that the arbor woes are over.....until the next purchase anyway!

Peter might be making a livelihood from his machining, I'm not. For me this is a hobby and guilt about the time spent in the shed when the house needs painting and the kitchen replacing, is more of an issue than over finishing something. That said, I'm thrilled with the Kaiser and the effort involved in getting the thing going has been well worth it.
I am thinking of another 30 arbor Ew. One with a threaded nose to suit my chucks and to take advantage of the 13's swing and its 2 horse donk.
Bob.
