    Default More Asian tool disaster

    Hi

Today, I tried to mill a 3 mm slot into the SHERATON lathe back gear , where the broken tooth is . I plan on brazing in a new tooth blank, then shape the blank

Well, the Asian plunge type end mill lasted all of 1/2 a second , it was destroyed . The gear would be case hardened ? I may have to look for a 1/8" Dormer end mill ? Mike

Use an angle grinder with a 1mm or 1.6mm cutoff disk. Not like you're needing the precision from an end mill at this stage. Then clean up the slot to size with a milling cutter if you need to.

The back gear on the mars is cast iron, you sure yours is steel? you may have hit a hard spot or the cutter may be just really crap. Do you have a horizontal mill running yet? Perfect excuse to buy an 1/8" slitting saw and use that. Mind you since you are going to braze a New tooth in you may as well just use the angle grinder....

I suppose the first few questions should be.

Was the tool for meant for cast/steel?

Was the spindle rotating the correct way?

Were you plunging or coming in from the side?

    What RPM were you running?

What depth of cut were you attempting?

    Were you feeding by hand?
