Atlas surface grinder is reborn.
I've just finished repainting this old Atlas surface grinder. It was in great condition apart from the paintwork. Colour was from a match I did of a King Rich milling machine, I am happy with how it looks. Name plate are my touch.
I had a few question for anyone else that knows much about these machines.
1. Is the spindle supposed to be packed with grease or run in oil? I believe it's currently packed with grease but I saw some photos of a Macson model that had a very similar looking spindle but with a sight glass to keep the oil topped up.
2. Did these models come fitted with a balancing arbor (with the three movable weights in the rear rebate)? My arbor has no provision for balancing.
3. The old motor that came with mine was hardwired in star so I had to put a single phase unit on it. It seems to run quite smoothly but I understand it is possible to balance the rotor to quell vibration, has anyone gone down this path?
Thank you.
