Default Automotive planetary gears in a project

I've just got hold of a set of planetary gears from a Holden auto transmission in really goo condition (an overdrive gear set), complete with the splined spindle it ran on.
I'd like to experiment with using it for something like a 'back-gear' for my lathe. I envisage a simple band brake or even a pin-on-hole 'dog clutch' to arrest the outer ring gear and let it freewheel for straight though 1:1 ratio.
Anyone used a planetary from an automotive gearbox for anything in a DIY project? Any obstacles or gotchas?
    Cheers,
    Joe

I came across this one day, it's what I'd like to do with a planetary gearset, although I fear it's probably beyond my abilities...

I remember when he posted that and saved the whole thread, a work of art. I think anyone that puts there mind to it could make one, and having that post to go off would take a lot of guess work out of it.
If I remember right he even made a mistake and had to leave a gear out for it to work.
When are you going to start yours
