axle steel
i have just been turning a short bit of steel that i cut off an old box trailer axle its 1 3/4" dia and the stuff turns very very well , i am getting a great finnish straight off the tool like glass on 60 thou cuts at a mid range on my lathe feed rate and 540rpm . just like to know if anyone knows what the old box trailer and boat trailer axles were made from maybe 30 or 40 years ago .
i assume it was a better than average stuff because it needed a turned taper and threaded section on each end .

It's probably 1045 most trailer axles are. 1045 is great to machine, chips well and is easy to get a good finish on.

Hi Johno, from memory axles back then used Duraflex, as it was called, don't know what it's called now days. Someone else might be able to tell you what it is, if it has been changed.

i had trouble at first with 100 foot long chips untill i went for a deeper DOC and upped the feed rate then the chips were about 6 inch long and i had no trouble at all . i am using a indexable insert tool so that would be why it wanted a deep cut i suppose .
anyway i love this material what ever it is . i was thinking maybe it was 12L14 cos i have heard its good to turn though i have never turned any of it .
wish i had more of this stuff , have to keep my eye out for old axles .

It's my understanding that 1045 is the same or similar to duraflex.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

I would agree that it is most likely 1045, or some other similar grade as that is the only grade that I have heard being used for trailer axles.
