I checked my friend's machine. Yes, the bearing housings were quite warm after running for a while. But it's not as bad as had been reported. Possibly they are running cooler now after some use. There was evidence of some grease melting/leakage.
I decided it's OK to continue as is, monitor and repair if and when needed. Good thing is access is now good, and replacement bearings are cheap.
