    Default Bearings

In my pursuit of some small bearing balls I contacted SKF. It was recommended that I check out a firm called Anthony Innovations. They have some stuff that may be of interest.

    No Dave.

Most of the stuff they have is for material handling. Heavy duty. Some quite special bearings that might find application in some of the stuff that interests us. Trolley bearings for gantries etc. definitely not indicator bearings.

If I'd added the link to my 1mm ball thread, who would have looked at it other than those that had participated in that discussion? No one.

A lot of interesting information gets buried in posts because of the title of the original thread.

    Bob.

Bob, while I agree that pertinent thread titles are a Good Idea, the search feature will find keywords in bodies as well as titles.

I can't speak for others, but I read virtually everything posted on this forum. Even threads not directly relevant to me, because I know that conversations inevitably wander, and I'm bound to find something useful or interesting. I would have thought others might share that approach.

    OK.

I will never again start a new thread if I can find an existing thread that contains some semblance to the topic I might wish to discuss or inform others of.

It was certainly not my intention to cause confusion or to clog this forum with unnecessary posts.

I'm no authority Bob. You should take anything I say as just one idea. And different people do use forums very differently. For instance, I don't use the 'new posts' feature. I just go straight to metalwork and read everything there and ignore the rest. Those who read more broadly and just view new posts probably get annoyed with people like me because we often don't use quotes for context. We can just scroll up; they can't. Maybe some people do skip a lot of content based on the thread title, I don't know. But I think if you want to help those people you may need to be more specific than 'bearings'.

Seems to me like a thing worth discussing. I'd be interested in other viewpoints anyway.

    Default My opinion

Brian, I am like you with coming strait to the metal work forum, and have missed out on buying things in the for sale section because I don't check in often enough. I also forget about the Hercus area and welding etc sections.
Even though this is my main forum, I am a member of about 10 or more different forums and don't have the time to come to this site and read all the new posts on every topic. Every now and again I will browse other parts in the wood work forum to see whats new to learn.

I agree about not starting new post if there is already a current thread going on a similar thing. If what your going to post is off topic to the thread, then it might be better off starting a new thread. If people don't want to read the threads, it's there loss as thats what we are here for,to read and learn.

    Bob,
Don't get me wrong, as I enjoy your posts and your pictures, and I have learn't some good things from your postings.
It's just my opinion, but I think rather than start new threads on the same subject, it's better to just post on the original thread. The search engine is pretty good on this forum and will pick up on key words.
I like Bryan's idea of getting other opinions on this subject, as we maybe the only 2 that think this way.
I also think the mods on here do a good job and let us run the form as we please, and only step in if really needed.

Thanks for the link Bob, I passed it on to a friend needing some specialist bearings.

There's nothing wrong with posting another new thread, if you hadn't mentioned about the steel balls thread, I certainly wouldn't have known this thread was related. It would have been just another considerate forumite posting some useful information. Good for you. We've had spelling nazis, tree felling nazis, let's not start with new post nazis too. This place is a community overseen by some pretty special people, lets leave it to them to decide on posting policy shall we? And right now I don't see them complaining about users posting helpful info.

    Cheers
    Michael
