Simon, Hammersnipe (like Gixen mentioned above) is an Ebay Snipe service which places automatic snipe bids on your behalf on Ebay. I am only familiar with Hammersnipe which places a snipe bid about 12 seconds before the auction ends, later if you pay a fee.
I have used it for a few years with almost 100% success, but I certainly don't use it for every auction , only those where I can't be there to do my own sniping.
Reading through the Gixen info it sounds even better than Hammersnipe.
I still prefer manual sniping as I can get closer to the auction end, my record is 1 second before the auction ended, but that was only because Ebay suddenly slowed!
Gets the adrenalin flowing though

Additional Goading
This is the Taster I should have. It has a 12mm arbor. This belongs to Christian Groves and has an adapter mounted for insertion in his Tormach spindle. The "NG- new generation" Taster is 11.76mm shorter that my Universal model. When size matters, the NG is a winner.
Other manufacturers offer similar devices. Hahn and Kolb' s ATORN 3-D Kantentaster looks to me like a rebadged Haimer. Long Island Indicator service say it's made by Kafer? ATORN 3-D-Kantentaster mit Messuhr - YouTube. Haff-Schneider have a version - Haff & Schneider GmbH & Co. OHG, Nesselwang - 3D-Taster - Rotoklick - Vorrichtungsbau - Powerfix - Präzisionsmechanik

I use an android app caller mybidder auction, its free and will bid as short as 3sec before the end, the standard is 5sec. Even though I feel better bidding myself, I find the eBay android app can be a little fickle when it comes to giving me notice a watched item is ending. So if I'm really interested in something when I see it I set the snipe then and there and forget about. Never stuffed up yet.
Bob, now your tempting me. If the h&k is made by käfer it will be a good bit of gear. Dro first.....don't look, dro first....arghhhh

OK. Idefinately missing something here with this bidding capper. If I want something on ebay, I put in my maximum bid. If I'm the highest bidder, I get the item, no matter how late someone else places a bid. How do these bidding apps help me with that?

The way most of them work is that they put you bid on at the last moment, so the person you have out bid does not have the chance to go back and increase their bid. The only way to defeat that sort of thing is to put a large bid on so that the sniping program is outbid - then the person using it doesn't have time to rebid. Done that a couple of times heh heh.
(relies on the fact that you only pay the second highest person's bid plus a bit. Of course if there are two idiots out there...)

Simon, in theory that is correct and as a seller on Ebay I definitely love buyers that put in their maximum bid as early as possible.
It is then quite interesting to watch other buyers to sit there and peck at your bid, bidding my item up and up, just to find out what your bid is. It is an open invitation to these people, they have to sit there and bid against you.
My method is the opposite, like you I have a maximum that I am willing to pay, but I only bid at the last possible moment. If my bid gets it, great, if it doesn't so be it.
Now normally I do this myself, set the price and hit the bid button around the 10-8 seconds mark. I either get it or I don't, no one else can overbid me if I do, if I get outbid I won't have time to be tempted to up my bid.
If I can't be there, that is when the snipe program comes in to place.
I guess we all have different ways to approach this, but I am not there to increase the price of the item so I don't bid early for the entertainment of what I call "hunt and peck" bidders.

Yeah your better off not showing your cards early so to speak, then grab them at the end if your going to be near a computer or phone. This way they have no idea of what you going to bid until it's all over.
As Fred said it up to the individual, but if someone can see what your bid is they have time to think about and bid higher, and they get carried away with the bidding wanting to win.
