    Default Black Engineers Square

I've just purchased a Moore & Wright engineers square that is painted* mate black. Someone has ground some lettering in the side and the black is over that so I assume it didn't leave the M&W factory black. Can anyone come up with a reason why you'd want a black square? or do I assume its to hide rust stains(and the shocking letter grinding job)

*I'm not so sure its paint, maybe its black oxide?

    Stu,
I am pretty sure its Phoshate, some will turn out a black colur.
Some old M &W squares were done with a phosphate finish similar to the receivers on 303 rifles. Mine certainly was not rust proof but served to lengthen the intervals at which oil should be applied. I did a set at school with phosphate and they lasted about a year with kids handling them on a regular basis . I have lanolin grease which I use after the phos treatment. It has not been a year for the gear i did at home, but seems to be better than other carp I have tried.

I did a explanation a few years back on how to do it, in this forum.

My thoughts too Michael, I was even wondering if it had been part of H.M. Defence equipment, and had been treated to make it both more rust resistant and more difficult to see in the field.

The stealth square, you sneak up on the enemy and adjust their targetting systems to be out of square..

    Hi Guys,

Well I decoded the grinding......I assume the the n is an m(shows up surprisingly well in the picture)

Assuming it's Phoshate, will evapo-rust(or something along those lines) effect it? It's a little rough around the edges, seems a shame to make it all shiny again but there may not be any other way.

    Thank you

    Stuart

p.s. lol Ray, felt a little like I needed some stealth to make my getaway, given what I paid for it.

If it was sourced from Australia, a Google search shows it could be from "Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works".

    Hi Grahame,

Thank you. Based on your PM, I think I'll give it a "working clothes"* clean and see if black is any use... then make up my mind to either make it shiny or make it shiny and re phosphate it.

I havent even measured it up yet..... maybe it needs far more work than I'm thinking.

Well I gave Phil a look at the square today. He pointed out a few signs that show its been used on a welding bench. Now while it would make a nice welding square, I already have a one and I dont think I could bring myself to use it as such. So I might put it away for a rainy day then have a go at cleaning it up a little and see what I end up with.
