    Default Boring attachment

anyone had a go at making a boring attachment (sorry correct name escapes me atm) for boring large holes (larger than common drill sizes anyway) in a mill / drill.

I came a cross a detailed description sometime ago, but for the life of me can't seem to find it know

    yes thats what I'm after.

pretty complex design though, reckon I'd struggle with the indexing etx and numbering.

    This the one?

Or you could try CDCO in the US, good prices and reasonable postage.

Or this one from Little Machine Shop

The dovetail cutter will cost $60.00 just to cut the dovetail, cheapest set of dovetail cutters I have seen is around $ 220.00.
Time and cost of material would easily exceed the price of a bought one.

But if you want the experience of making such a tool then its worth rolling your own .

Default "Milling - A Complete Course"

from the "Workshop Practice Series", by Harold Hall has a boring head as one of the projects.

It includes an alternative how-to for making the dovetails without using a dovetail cutter.

    Cheers,

    Tod,
I have a Myford Super 7. with quite a few attachments and would be able to make a boring head like that .
    But ,,,,
The link I posted was not to my work ,but a site that I have had bookmarked.
I use it as an inspirational reference for future projects I would like to make.

I also have a Edgwick MK1 6-1/2" center height toolroom lathe ,but is not functional at this time.
I am also a Fitter and Turner by trade ,but don't work in my trade any more ,Its more a hobby now.

    Oldhack,

If you are not after the precision of a boring head but just want to drill bigger than 1/2" holes occasionally, these are a bit cheaper than a boring head. They work OK in a reasonable sized drill press too.

    http://www.practool.com/super-drill.html

The tool requires a 1/2" pilot hole, and the hole diameter is set using the setting gauge supplied. Before I got a boring head I used to use mine to drill up to 50 mm holes in steel plate with no problems, though there is a bit of mucking about to reset the tool for holes bigger than 40 mm. I still use it occasionally if the job won't fit in the lathe or mill. It uses pre-ground re-sharpenable HSS cutters. They are not production type tools but are very handy if you only need to drill the occasional larger hole.
