    Default Boring Head Dissection

I dismantled my recently acquired Flynn 4 inch boring head and thought I'd take a few photos for those that may be interested.

I was surprised to find welds inside the head. The end plates for the lead screw are recessed into the body and welded in place. The lead screw nut is also welded to the sliding tool holder. The lead screw is hollow and internally threaded. A set screw, accessible from the dial end, faciltates the adjustment of end play by locking against the rear retaining screw.

The gib is adjustable by means of a pair of 1/8" set screws. These screws raise or lower the gib which is located in position with the two cap screws. The tool holder is locked with a single grub screw.

All pretty straight forward and nicely executed.
