    Hi,

    Thanks for the ASO explanation, think you might be right. I did give it a good hit with a hammer, had a long high pitched ping to it. I will hit the big anvil (a real anvil) at work today to compare.

    Ben

    [QUOTE=bwal74;1485607]Hi,

    The markets are in Toukley on the Central Coast, in the Coles or Woolies carpark. I'm not if they are weekly or monthly on Sunday's. Its just a community market.
    /QUOTE]
    Those markets are on every Sunday ( or at least they used to be, I haven't been for a while now) When I used to live a lot closer ( back in the early 1980's, so they have been going for a while now) I used to go there regularly. I've picked up a few bargains there myself. The bloke that used to run them had an old truck all decked out with racks and shelves. He sold all sorts of stuff, but most of it was blokely/shed type stuff. He doesn't go there anymore as he's moved up to Nabiac.
    I bought a couple of sets of Mitutoyo mics (0-25 combi's and 25 - 50 std's) and a real nice Albrecht 3/8" keyless chuck from those markets back in the 80's. I think at the time I paid about $15 each for the mics and about $5 for the chuck. Even back then I thought that was a bargain.

    One of the reasons I don't have mine bolted down is that I only have a small shed and I have it in a corner. This means I have sometimes to turn it around 180º and it is easier to turn the anvil around on the stump than when it is attached to the stump. What I do need is a higher stump.

    I have never considered even cleaning mine, certainly paint is not a good idea with hot metal in close contact, but i find if a bit of surface rust appears it is gone with the first hot bit of steel that goes on her.
    The main reason I cleaned it up was I wanted to see how madly pitted and flat it was. It turn out to be OK. The sides of the anvil were already painted with several layers of lead based paint so I took it outside and attacked with a wire brush on an angle grinder (while wearing my Triton dust mask!) and repainted it with some epoxy enamel.

    You are right, until you have an anvil you don't really realize how useful they are, from straitening the odd bar, punching, knocking out pins to forging. I have even used mine to press some veneer work.......
    The first thing I did with mine was bend up a dozen 6" circular clamps for my DC ducting from 3 mm galv strap on it. Not quite the conventional way of doing it but it still worked.
