I have to say thanks to Old Biker (Mark) and Woodlee (Kev) who gave me encouragement and sage advice while going through the buy.
They both own Myfords so I know I am in good company.
I spent time twiddling yesterday afternoon me getting to know the lathe and seeing how my hands and fingers handle things. The major problem will be the detent springs and pulling the lever knobs I will have to either make T handles OR a tool to assist. I can do it but its very difficult when the strength isn't there.
In going through all the bits and pieces the following is the only thing I just don't understand. I know its a Faceplate its the additional bit thats got me I thought maybe for use with dogs and such ??? If anyone can shed some light on it please. I have been through Myford's site and material I have still none the wiser.

Looks like a drive dog Ray.
Congrats on the acquisition of a fine looking lathe.

I guess missing dog would count for my thoughtlessness thanks Fred and Mark I thought I saw one when I went to check the lathe out but none in the box of bits.

It looks rather big and chunky to be a drive pin for a lathe dog; could it be a boring button also?

Nothing like a new toy to play with is there? Great therapy...... I know you will enjoy it.

Hi Ray,
There was a little ML7 at WAIT (Curtin Uni) in the Jewellery Workshop when I was a student there back in the early 80s. I loved using that lathe and used it whenever I could. Beautifully smooth and quiet. A real pleasure to operate.
I have a copy of Ian Bradley's Myford Series 7 Manual. Covers the ML7, the ML7-R and the Super7. If it is of any use to you it's yours. Just send me your address.
Bob.

Nice pick up Ray.
I am extremely envious. One day I will have enough room for a small metal lathe. Those were the droids I was looking for.

Definitely supplied by Myford as a catch plate but as the pin is just held on with a nut it can easily be turned into a large flycutter with a suitable holder for a piece of tool steel. I have another one somewhere used as a small faceplate with tapped holes put in as needed.
My pic. shows a between centres boring bar, the only piece handy with a centre each end.
Tip of the day - turning between centres put a strong lacky band round the catch pin & carrier - stops all that rattling....

Really jealous here.
Although I have not used a metal lathe since school, I really want to add one to my shed to do all those litlle things, like making pen bushes etc.
I would love to be able to look over your shoulder and learn.____________________________________________________________
