32 rpm is way too slow.

I suggest you download and read this book - Text Book of Turning. It's old but good. See page 21 for cutting speeds.

    Thanks Rob

I know with wood the smaller diam the faster the machine goes should have equated that but with some information at hand and a chart from the fellow I bought the lathe off. Looks like a lot of reading to do.

    Gee Ray,
With all these books you'll become a qualified book machinist in no time. Another one to add to the list and my all time favourite though I'm not a model engineering buff, is George Thomas' The Model Engineers Workshop Manual. Seriously Myford biased, it is chock a block full of superbly designed and executed accessories. Beautifully written and illustrated. In my humble opinion, worth owning.

I am also fond of Peter Hercus' Text Book of Turning.

    Bob.

Not what I want tho Bob more the hands on type, but with this I feel I need to read as much as I can I have had for many years Newnes Engineering Works Practice all 4 books and the wall charts a pick up about 20 years ago at a book sale when doing the Mech Eng dip never completed due to CFS (chronic fatigue). I have started to read that a dozen times I should I might learn something. I did use it as reference during the course got 3/4 way through the course but the CFS took hold and studying went out the window.

I have to add that reading and watch the metal heads on here has been of great inspiration and I just watch in awe often.

Get reading Ray. I've got a job that needs both metal and wood turning and I can't do either. So looks like you're it. Now hurry up and get good
