Brass Bar Suppliers - Any Suggestions
My current project is finally nearing completion which means I need to recommence work on my little woodie plane. Part of that work involves making a lever cap and a couple of knurled knobs.
Yesterday, I went to Robert Cameron and Co Robert Cameron with the hopeful intention of buying some 5/8" x 3" flat bar and some 7/8" round bar. I came away with some 3/4" flat and a short length of 1" round bar. Their range of sizes was limited, plenty of thinner sections up to 1/2" but not a lot of selection in larger sizes.
Can anyone suggest some other supplier of cut to length brass? Whilst I have sufficient material for my current plane, I wouldn't mind trying my hand at another plane when I have bowled this one over.

Hi Anorak Bob,
Postage/freight probably prohibitive but here's a supplier over this side willing to supply small quantities.

Hope you find someone suitable that's closer.

Thank you Log,
Looking at Weston's stock list, maybe I was optimistic in chasing 5/8" x 3". Could be that it's not a standard size. Probably the reason why some makers of pretend Norris planes use half inch bar for their lever caps.

BT I have made friends with a production engineering company doing mainly CNC work. They always have bar ends that the auto feed on the CNC can no longer grip, usuallly around the 100-150mm and they are happy to part with those for a reasonable consideration. I have picked up all sorts of materials including brass, both round and hex.
I also pick up offcuts at our local Model Engineering Exhibtion held biennually here in Bendigo, in Melbourne the year in between.

Hi Fred,
Handy when you find a source of cheap offcuts. Bohler's Steel Store over here had a skip outside full of bar ends, cast, high tensile, chrome bar, leaded bar, you name it, that they would sell off at scrap rates. Then a new manager was appointed and he stopped the practice. Rod M is a capable dumpster diver but he is secretive about their locations, understandably so. Austral Wright sell brass but not in cut lengths. I could see if they might profer the names of some of there purchasers. Could be a source of bar ends.
Thanks Scott. I will give them a call.

I just spoke with a friend who is in the steel game, he suggested trying:
Interlloy
and
Rondas
134 Fitzgerald St, Perth.
Said you might have more luck getting offcuts from Rondas, they're a bit smaller.
Hope this helps Bob-Scott

If all else fails Bob I can get some here and post it to you, or even hand deliver it.

I usually go to George White when I need any brass. I believe they have the largest range of sizes in Oz and it looks like they will post small orders.
Just had a look and they do stock 3" x 5/8" flat bar.
