Thread: Broken Myford ML7 Bull Gear

Hi Swarf4ages,
When you find one,please let me know. I have an ML7 with a similar broken gear. The ML7 has been in my workshop for about 40 years,so it has paid for itself well. I have some brochures and maybe some technical info. on the ML7. If these can be any help,I'll photocopy and forward them to you.

Guys, cutting straight tooth gears is not a big drama if you have the cutters. If you can post a drawing and/ or pictures there might be someone who could cut one for you living near by. Depending on the damage, the gears could possibly even be repaired.

Depending on the amount of wall thickness there is between the teeth and the main body of the gear it is possable to replace the teeth with a ring.
The weld or pin repair is possable.
Machining a complete one would probably be the hardest to do.

It looks like pipeclay is the honourable 'Guru' with much credit to his name.
As luck would have it, the 'Grand Master' has already replied to my cry for help.
I'll email pipeclay as I'm also in Sydney and he's younger than me!!

A huge thanks to 'pipeclay'.
I now have a re-cut fully operational bull gear.
If any members out there are stuck with broken gears etc, I thoroughly recommend getting in touch with 'pipeclay'.If it's at all possible to fix, he can do it. His depth of knowledge, skill and generosity of spirit are a rare find these days and I reckon we're lucky to have him on this site.

Hi Pipeclay,
Following on from previous notes ,I come to you for advice. I have found time to repair/replace a damaged gear on my well used Myford ML7 lathe. Attached are three photos of the gear. Would you advise me. Can the gear be repaired or is it best to seek a replacement? I hope I'm not imposing on you,but your advice would be invaluable.

A steel ring gear would be the preffered fix in my opinion.
