The Burke Sensitive Drill Press
Thought I'd share with you guys my current little project.
Here is the original catalog page for the drill.

This is what I got:

My plan is to convert it back to "Original" as a flat belt machine. As so many of the original parts are missing and will need to be remade, this will be a rebuild rather than true restoration.
So far I have stripped the machine down and taken it back to bare metal.

It's been sanded back and coated in etch primer now.

I was wondering if it is possible to get the broken flange on the pulley brazed or silver soldered to repair it?? Can you braze with a map gas torch??
The block of steel will hopefully end up being a future pair of top guide pulleys.

I also would like to replace the locking bolt. I'm having difficulty locating a LH ½" UNF 20 bolt, or someone with suitable LH Die
The biggest challenge will be to make a new set of lower pulleys. Any suggestions welcomed.

I picked up a 10mm Square S/Steel for the belt shifter. The shifter fork & handle yet to be done.

I had to make a new Upper guide shaft, which I used a bit of ½" S/Steel round stock and I made some Little brass collars, the original had swaged on rings but that doesn't allow easy service in the future.

If you can send me dimensions I can make up a bolt like that for you. Shouldn't take long.

Suitable cast iron stock would be available to make both replacement items if required.

Why not stick with hardwood since it is a rebuild and not a true restoration? Wooden pulleys have been around forever, and were quite satisfactory. For example:

I might keep the wood ones if they turn out nice.
Sketch of the upper guide pulleys. These will be steel with bronze bushes.
I don't see how to turn the narrow deep recesses on a lathe, so I assume they would need to be done in a mill on a rotary table. The nominal wall thickness on mine are ¼"…and roughly to scale the ones in the photo look much thinner, but not sure how thin is string enough??…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Do you have a boring bar? The ones with carbide brazed on a Left and a Right hand, are the ones I'm thinking of. Left hand to do the cutting furtherest away from the chuck, and right hand for the centre. If you don't have em, PM me and I'll send a couple over.
Re thickness, I'd say that anywhere from 5 mm upwards, should be more than sufficient.
A couple of dumb bells, should be OK for this, if you wanted to use cast, instead of steel.
