Thread: Does anybody know where to buy cheap fatigue rubber mats

OUrs come from Brisbane Safety Matting. We only use 600x900mm mats, but they were about $60 from memory. I always think comfort should come before price, and these guys had the best price at the time- some people wanted closer to $200!

I buy mine from K-Mart. $29.00 for enough to cover about 2 sq mt. I havent fornd them in every K-Mart, but the ones that do have them have them in the camping section.

Hare & Forbes in Dandenong have Anti-fatigue Rubber mats 1530mm x 920mm at $45 each. I bought one when on special a couple of months ago - certainly better than concrete underfoot.

I made up duck boards in front of all my machines that I tend to stand in front of for extended periods, such as drill press, lathe, mortice machine, spindle moulder, stroke sander.

I used the 42x19 pr hardwood from Bunnies, which was on special at $2.20/m

I like timber over plastic, but that is just my personal preference. Mabey an idea for you to consider anyway??

The modular, clip together mats are on special at K-Mart this week - pack of 6 600x600 tiles with edging strips, EVA foam. Be aware that K-Mart sell both 6 packs with and 4 packs without edging, currently the 6 packs are grey & the 4's are blue. Not rubber, so if you have a latex allergy like me, you don't have to go & scrub your hands after moving them.

Several of the camping chains also sell the tiles - for more than K-Mart - but they have the edging strips singly & the camp store ones have a tapered edge inlike the K-Mart ones.

I had a bit of work last year installing pool blankets so people with pools could meet the water restrictions. The supplier would send a rectangular blanket big enough to cover the pool and plenty to spare, and we'd cut it to fit the pool. Being a hoarder, I saved the big bits until I found something useful to do with it!

So I have bright blue, heavy duty bubble wrap as anti fatigue matting in my workshop. Its very comfortable, no, the bubbles don't pop, but it does make a bit of a noise.

Here is a pic of what I use. They are the clip together kids mats. Picked them up from roadside chuckout and just keep adding to them every time I see more. I think they are available from K Mart and Clarke Rubber new. No idea on price though. Have saved the odd chisel edge as well as being nice to stand on.

Those Kmart mats wont hold up for long in a metal shop- they are the same foam as exercise or camping mats. The best option would be to build a sprung floor- essentially sheets of ply, with lumps of foam attached at 250-300mm centres. We used to build and install these for touring ballet companies when i used to work in theatre. You could use any timber- pallets or similar would be ideal, and the cost of foam would be minimised.
I am about to build a sprung floor for my shed, but using large spiral springs (about 6mm dia steel 90mm dia at base tapering to 30mm at top, 40mm high) They are used as spring washers i believe on galvanised bolting of utility poles.

I bought a mat from Clark Rubber-1500x900 and cut it in half (lengthwise) and have one piece in front of my lathe and the other piece in front of my mill. It is a rusty brownish colour and has holes moulded into it which allow the shavings to fall through, and it has the tapered edge. I don't remember how much it cost but It wasn't excessive. I find it very comfortable to walk on.
